WheelHorse79 271 #1 Posted August 10, 2015 (edited) I am fascinated by the fiberglass hood RJ in the for sale section. I've never even seen a picture of one before, and I realize that only the first 100 or so had the "glass" hood. Could we please start a thread discussing these early, rare tractors? And whipny, would you mind posting some pictures of your fascinating early tractor in this thread? I don't know when we'll get a chance to see one of these super rare horses again. CasualObserver 3,411 #2 Posted August 10, 2015 (edited) If you tag him like this @whlpny , he should be notified about being mentioned. That way he might find this thread. I don't think he checks in here daily like some, and he might not see this request otherwise. You could also send him a PM. stevebo-(Moderator) 8,532 #4 Posted August 10, 2015 The first 100 did not have fiberglass hoods. in fact I believe only the RJ25's had them. I have one of the early RJ's and 3 more of the later 35's. I am not an expert in any way however some here are and could contribute more. Clay is one of them IMO along with Vin's RJ.

AMC RULES 37,196 #6 Posted August 10, 2015 I think I remember reading about Vin reproducing the cable steering set up...could always be put back in place.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,532 #7 Posted August 11, 2015 I had Vin install the complete cable steer in my early 55' at the show and it is awesome! Steering is so much nicer than the link steering.
DennisThornton 4,771 #8 Posted August 11, 2015 I had Vin install the complete cable steer in my early 55' at the show and it is awesome! Steering is so much nicer than the link steering. Seriously! Wow! So perhaps better but just didn't hold up! Please expound!
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,532 #9 Posted August 11, 2015 Better for driving at shows but when you work them the front axle would not have the stops and the cable got hung up on the frame and broke. Many frames were cut or knotched to allow cables to pass through.
VinsRJ 723 #10 Posted August 12, 2015 The cable steer is a great option but not nearly as strong as the link steering.I see there was a lot of question surrounding the Fiberglass Hood tractor not being a cable steer. Keep in mind that somewhere during 1955 the Ponds dump the cable steer set up for the link system based on the number of warranty work requests. With that said, just because a tractor does not have its original cable steer set up in place doesn't mean it wasn't a cable steer, it just means that the weak cable gave up and the Ponds said to heck with that design.I have made a couple of cable steer repro set ups and so far they have been working without issue, namely Steve's. I have more in the works and will be coming out with a vid on my YouTube Chanel explaining the whole set up and what I offer.
