N3PUY 1,031 #1 Posted August 4, 2015 I just picked this up a few miles up the road. Owner says it's a 1948 Wheel Horse. I didn't agree or disagree. It's mine now. No motor and maybe something missing. Take a look. I can't find an ID tag.
squonk 43,806 #2 Posted August 4, 2015 All I know is it's not a 48. 55-57 maybe?
N3PUY 1,031 #3 Posted August 4, 2015 Yeah.... I didn't think it was a 48 but it doesn't say "Wheel Horse" , only "POND".Here's pics of the deck and plow that came with it.And it has wheel weights.

953 nut 59,940 #5 Posted August 5, 2015 1955 or 1956 RJ, very nice find, The cast iron steering wheel and the reversing clutch for the engine are being reproduced and a K-90 will finish the package.
N3PUY 1,031 #6 Posted August 5, 2015 Anybody have any thoughts on the deck and plow??? Original? 1955 or 1956 RJ, very nice find, The cast iron steering wheel and the reversing clutch for the engine are being reproduced and a K-90 will finish the package. 953, are you saying the steering wheel is incorrect? And what's the reversing clutch? I don't have a K-90 ..... I have a K-181 and a 2½HP Tecumseh 2-cycle

rj35hunter 288 #8 Posted August 5, 2015 (edited) Like Jake said....1956 for sure with that one year only style frame....the 55,57, and some56 years had the thicker solid channel iron frame. That year would be more correct with a Clinton 1200 3.6 HP engine and more than likely the smaller cast iron steering wheel was what it had originally.....the engine pulley would have a brass reverse disc built on to it to match up to the variable speed pulley that's on it now for reverse when you pull the speed selector all the way back to make contact with the brass disc and the skinny groove on the speed pulley. The deck and plow is completely original and correct for that tractor too...square gear covers are a giveaway compared to later decks having rounder ones. It's got the very sought after brake kit option too! The variable speed pulley is flipped down and should be up and will need a belt guard too.... rj35hunter 288 #9 Posted August 5, 2015 (edited) This is one of my late 55's but will give you a better idea of how it should look.....this one is all original down to the paint and has the plow bar bolted to the frame but the actual plow is put up..... WheelHorse79 271 #10 Posted August 5, 2015 It looks like his RJ35 has the optional brake pedal. How rare is the brake option on an RJ?
N3PUY 1,031 #11 Posted August 5, 2015 Hey Guys, Thanks for all the feedback. I'm going out and flip that pulley over now that I see how it should be. That "optional" brake does work. I'm glad noone noticed the steering shaft was cut off. The PPO cut it below the steering wheel because he couldn't get the wheel off. I'll weld the shaft back together. I pressed the piece out of the wheel. Is the steering wheel the correct one?Joe
N3PUY 1,031 #12 Posted August 6, 2015 (edited) And is the steering link suppose to be bent like this? rj35hunter, I thought the rod out front was to move round bales of hay! Edited August 6, 2015 by N3PUY
Jake Kuhn 1,579 #13 Posted August 6, 2015 Here are some pictures for you, this one is a late 55, but the same tractor besides the frame. If you need any more let me know. Also that steering link should be straight besides the bends on the ends, but one end is bent at a different angle than the other so it lines up with the steering shaft block. drive system....you can see the brass disk on the engine pulley, when you pull the speed selector arm all the way back it pulls the veri drive pulley onto the brass disk which reverses the direction of the belt.rear hitch you are missing, there are 2 different style hitches they used, this is the earlier style. Both are correct for your tractor I've seen both used. The steering wheel it should have, you can also see the throttle control below itand correct gas tank, however these straps aren't original but work just fine
N3PUY 1,031 #14 Posted August 6, 2015 Nice pictures Jake. The drive pulley looks new ... where did you get it? I figured I had the wrong gas tank .... I might have a better one. I also see my shift handle is bent. I think the belt guard is a must find or make. What is inside the final drive case? I would guess a chain since there is a plug at the top.Where the hood meets the grille... is it welded or just bolted together?
Jake Kuhn 1,579 #15 Posted August 6, 2015 Pulley is a reproduction from Joe Papke, I will pm you his contact info. He also carrys reproduction belt guards as well. And the steering wheels are available from Bill Jenkins but I don't have his contact info, maybe someone here does? Also hood is welded together, and I added a picture of the inside of the gear case form when I went through the rear in this one last winter.
