If it will twist the roll pin that secures the donut to the shifter has likely sheared. The pin is shorter that the hole because the hole is shared with the dog-point set screw that the shifter pivots on. stevasaurus 22,230 #4 Posted July 13, 2015 It may be that your shift forks are out of line. It can happen with a sloppy shifter or not doing a sharp "H" pattern when shifting. Take a look at this thread and then pull out your shifter...if you think you are in neutral...you should see the forks form a square.
