How sloppy is the shifter?  Dog point screw may need adjusting.  Just tossing that out there since mine needs to be adjusted really bad...well actually I need to get it running first!

Try twisting or turning the shifter back and forth with normal pressure. If it will twist the roll pin that secures the donut to the shifter has likely sheared. The pin is shorter that the hole because the hole is shared with the dog-point set screw that the shifter pivots on. The pin is driven in flush with the back of the donut.

933168 roll pin for the shifter donut 5/32" x 13/16"

It may be that your shift forks are out of line.  It can happen with a sloppy shifter or not doing a sharp "H" pattern when shifting.  Take a look at this thread and then pull out your shifter...if you think you are in neutral...you should see the forks form a square.  You need to pull it anyway to check out what Garry and Doug said.  :)
