What can you fellas tell me...

Hi, folks!

Got a line on an '88 518H with 700 hours, one-owner, and appears to be "tight and right". What are the reliability/pitfalls of this model? Rideawaysenior told me the hydro is good but tends to heat up under load with ground implements. Any other problems? Is the 18 hp Onan twin in these prone to valve problems like the 20?

OK, 'nuf questions for the moment! :D

Thanks as always!

Well, the 518 has the Eaton 700 instead of the 1100 like the 520. This unit tends to be less reliable than the 1100 and it doesn't have the serviceable filter. As a mowing machine and for light snow removal I'd say they are sufficient. I wouldn't recommend it for ground engaging attachments or loader use. I suppose it's capable, but your asking a bit much of this particular hydro unit IMO.

I'd say the 218 twin should be no different than the 220 as far as reliability. Keep the fins clean, regular oil changes etc. and they are fine powerplants. Overheat one too often and the valve seat issue can sneak up.

Duff as Dustin states, good earl changes with good low loss filters! :hide:
