bell crank removal

Recommended Posts

cod

Without resorting to dynamite, is there some kind of puller I need to get the bell crank off its shaft?

I've tried to heat it up but I don't think a torch for sweating copper pipe is going to do the trick.  I managed to get the shaft out of the frame bushing on one side but the shaft refuses to slide through the crank and whacking it with a sledge hammer is starting to bend the frame.  I've also hosed it down with penetrating oil before and after I heat it up.  Not sure if I need to rent a ox-acetalene torch and really lay into it.

Any suggestions are welcome!
Thanks - Cod

On one of my 520's I ended up cutting the shaft to get it out then just for grins I put it in my 20 ton press.

No go, I had to heat it red hot with an acetylene torch then it still took all the 20 ton press could do to push it out.

Never saw anything like that before.

I bought a replacement on ebay and gave it a good coat of never seize so it will come out again if needed.

I'm thinking paying attention to this one would be a good idea. :)

It's a 418-A that I keep for parts.

Thanks guys.  I suspect instead of thinking it might come off on the tractor, I should have done as Dave shows in his picture and then gone with Cleat's suggestion although I'm not sure if I can find a 20 ton press.

Another "simple weekend" project that goes on forever...  ;-)

If you think it is rust holding it try a bit of battery juice on it as explained in this thread.

Keep the battery cables stretched out and the battery away from the work area in case it releases some gas which is explosive.
