help with gt14

Hello, I am new to wheel horse tractors. Just inherited a gt-14 from my uncle. Not sure what year it is, early 70's I believe. It runs and is in good shape, the transmission loses reverse  when it gets warm according to the small engine place I took it to that has experience with wheel horse tractors. Because the company that makes the transmissions (sun strand) is out of business, I was told to junk the tractor as I couldn't find parts for it. I would really like to fix it back up and get it running again. Can anyone help? I live in SW michigan. Also said the engine is losing some compression. Looking for someone in the area to help but at this point any advice would be appreciated. Thanks...

:WRS:     The first bit of advice I have for you is to never go back to that small engine place! You have a Sunstrand  90-2062  which is specific to the GT-14, but nearly all of the components are interchangeable with the 90-2046 which was used on the 1968 to 1973 smaller Wheel Horses. If parts are needed you can place a want add on this site.

Before you throw in the towel on this you should change the fluid and filter. You will want to get a NAPA 1410 filter. If the fluid you drain out is red, replace it with Dextron; if it is amber, use a good quality 10-30. There could be other things that require attention, but this would be the first step. Keep in mind that a Hydro should always be operated at 2/3 throttle or greater. Higher RPMs provide better cooling for the engine and transmission.

If you want to look at the manual for the tractor or transmission they can both be found on this site.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you make out.

@953 nut Through some communicating on private messaging and phone conversations, I was able to make time and stop by (well break down most of the way to) see this GT-14 last night and this is a very solid piece of equipment!  I don't know if this is the correct thing to do or not, but I tapped the roll pin backwards on the transmission drive/roll release screw and gave it another 1/4 turn in (assuming it might boost some drive pressure?).  Along with the transmission being serviced as posted above before I arrived, we were able to get the tractor running under it's own power with a new battery and driving around the yard!  It's quite a beast, that GT-14 compared to my little 502 and C-101's that I'm used to!  The PTO switch has power but is not transmitting power to the electric clutch, but when jumped to positive the clutch is working.  The lift rod is missing but the hydraulic lift is very operable and the deck has some cracks that need to be welded and plated to make a good food plot monster.  Thanks to George for my rescue on the side of the road and the ride home, it was great to meet you!  I was able to get the buggy loaded on the trailer this morning and Napa had the right alternator/generator to get it back on the road as soon as this rain lets up. :auto-layrubber:

Oh yeah, and this rig has a matching set of Wheel Horse brand tires in great shape too!  The right front looses air slowly, but it can be tubed I'm sure.  Good solid worker in my book.

The key switch has four positions; off, run with accessory, run, start. If you move the key one click to the left after starting it will should send power to the PTO. Also, there should be a fuse on the line to the PTO.
