What's all this about cleaning the fins on your Onan?

Sunday, I pulled the belt cover, and the bolts from the rear cylinder covers to get a look and clean if necessary.....  Pretty happy with what I found!  Has about 320 hours on it, and my grandfather used to carry a whisk-broom with him when he mowed so he could brush the grass off the intake!

I then changed the oil and filter, put in fresh plugs, and got the garden tilled!  Woohoo!

Those are pretty clean fins.  Apparently the engine has not developed any oil leaks.

Here are some pics of an ONAN P216 engine with about 1,000 hours on it and the prior owner did not get the memo about cleaning the fins.

So, if the cooling fins are not kept clean and get to look like this (I already scraped some grime off the bottom before taking the picture):

Then the engine will overheat and the inside of your engine will look like this.

Hey mine looks like that after just 5 minutes snowblowing on the first snowfall this past winter. Still looking for a new engine as the block and crank are toast as a result.

boomer,

I do plan to totally disassemble it as a low priority learning experience.

I will then spec everything to see how bad things are and if it is worth putting back together.

I do not really need the engine or the tractor it came off of.

I do like my ONANs so the more I know about them the better.

At least if I need parts sounds like you are the guy.

I know there are a few out on the internet but have you thought about making and selling how to videos for us ONAN fans?

Thanks

Jack
