iamknowitall 0 #1 Posted February 3, 2015 (edited) Hi Guys, I am new to this forum and an admitted idiot. I bummed a well used Wheel Horse (1986 312-8) from my father-in-law to restore and give to my 10 year old nephew. He loves tractors and wants to have a lawn mowing service. So, I pulled it out of a snow bank, trailered it home and started tearing it down. Unfortunately I didn't take enough pictures. My present issue is the spring for the PTO lever. I cant seem to figure out exactly how it fits. Does anyone have a good picture of the attachment points for this spring? Thanks Adam Edited February 3, 2015 by iamknowitall
Lane Ranger 11,439 #2 Posted February 3, 2015 (edited) Adam: This may be hard to see but I took some photos of the small spring that rides on the engagement lever to operate the PTO on my 1975 Wheel Horse B-80. I think this will be similar on your 312-8 PTO. My 1993 314-8 does not have this spring on it as the design was changed. Also if I remember correctly a spring use to be inside the PTO bell housing and rides in the center of the bell housing. Partstree.com is what I use to find parts for the particular tractor that I am working on. Edited February 3, 2015 by Lane Ranger
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #3 Posted February 3, 2015 There's a cotter pin through the clutch rod - back inside the hoodstand. One end of the spring hooks in the loop of the cotter pin and the other end fastens to the corner of the hoodstand.
iamknowitall 0 #4 Posted February 4, 2015 Thanks guys! I am sure there will be more questions before I am done!! The last tractor I restored, I was very familiar with. Unfortunately for me, I never even used this one before tearing it down.
Warning:Unsupervised 82 #5 Posted April 28, 2021 (edited) Certainly OP located it by now but others may need more PTO help. On Wheel Horses like 312-8, 412-8, basically all the 300, 400 series & other Toro/ Wheel Horses. They do still have a PTO spring but its up near the dash/lever end not the engine/PTO hub end like older ones where. I located more info on this site to share as my 414-8 PTO lever/switch started acting up once and I couldnt locate my spring anywhere. No idea it had one there or where mine is as its also MIA today. I simply ordered a new one after seeing it on my parts breakdown but then I couldnt even tell where it hooks to on their exploded 💩 images. Like TT said here, one end of the spring hooks into the eye of the cotter pin found on the rod and its other end hooks to the end of the bracket under the battery tray as shown in photo. Clicking on this picture takes you to more info on this subject. Big thanks to everyone helping everyone on everything! Edited April 28, 2021 by 123GO
