How I know this HT55B. T is Tecumseh, one 5 is stroke and the other is diameter if I remember right, making it a 5 hp rated, the B is big block, H is flat head.

Wow :scratchead:

No.

H and / or HT is crankshaft orientation (Horizontal) V would denote vertical shaft.

55 = 5.5hp

The letter suffix included in the basic model number (A, B, C, D, etc.) is the change progression in the basic model.

1170, 3088, 3089, etc. is the spec number (used to identify application and specific parts from the manual)

P indicates a Phelon magneto  W (or no letter) would be a Wico magneto.

Not guaranteed 100% accurate, but this is what I seem to remember:

The HT55B~3088P tag may belong to an early-production 502 engine. The 1962 32R lawn Ranger and later 502 models used an HT55C engine. (all I've ever seen)

The H55A-1170 tag / shroud belongs to a 1960 550 "Suburban".

They are often referred to as Lauson engines even though Tecumseh bought Lauson out a few years prior.
