fireman 1,022 #1 Posted December 25, 2014 I quickly used some rubbing compound with a damp rag, then gave it a quick coat of wax to see how the paint looks. It cleaned up pretty good. It smokes when you first start it but clears out after a little while. I think i'm gonna give the engine and quick rebuild. The transmission feels really strong. I'll see if I can con Ken into giving me a hand and see if we can clean up the paint a little more. Someone either broke or modified the brake pedal so i'll replace that. Otherwise that's it. I'll use it for plow duty when there's not enough snow for blower.

Wheel-N-It 2,976 #5 Posted December 25, 2014 It now looks like a well cared for working tractor even if it was not. The Simplicity wheel weights are perfect for these machines. They have a great look and add just the right amount of weight for most of the chores a tractor of this size will be asked to do.

Pollack Pete 2,273 #9 Posted December 25, 2014 Hey,that's a great looking C-120.You did a super job cleaning it up.You'll find that the 12 horse Kohler can handle anything you throw at it.Have fun with your new toy and have a Merry Christmas.
fireman 1,022 #10 Posted December 25, 2014 I think this will be a keeper. All my other Wheel Horses are restored and for show or cruising only. So I think I'm gonna keep it as it is except some more cleaning. This way I won't feel bad about working it or having it out in any inclement weather. I want to get the engine off and get it torn down and see what it may need.

Tankman 3,523 #13 Posted December 25, 2014 Very nice PA Horse! A PA Horse is a Horse of course! We have a bill pending in the Pennsylvania legislature that will prohibit out-of-staters from taking Horses out-of-state. The bill will be retroactive back to '73. Failure to return the Stallion to PA will result in a repossession and very steep financial fines. Even long jail terms! I can drop off a clean MTD (needs a little work (tranny) but again, is clean!) and pickup the Horse, on the hush hush of course! Save yourself now! I'll even pay for the gas myself unless your guilt is overwhelming! Pay up, ignorance of the law is no excuse! Consider yourself lucky................this time.

Ken B 3,189 #15 Posted December 25, 2014 That was an awesome score Jeff. It will be interesting to see what you find once you open the engine up. Let me know when you plan to shine it up a little more, I'd be willing to give a hand in that area. I haven't seen too many C-120 hydro's with hydraulic lift myself and I've never seen one that clean. The weights don't look too bad on there, I like the look of Cub Cadet weights painted red myself. It would be worth finding a nice correct seat for that one..
fireman 1,022 #16 Posted December 26, 2014 Yeah it's to bad they're not oem Wheel Horse but they do look good. Got a set of chains with it too.
cruisnblue48 856 #17 Posted December 26, 2014 (edited) That's a real nice C-120, Jeff! But hold on there, Tank. I bought a real nice RJ-35 from Jeff earlier this year. Somehow managed to smuggle that one across the border from Connecticut into PA without getting caught by the authorities. Mine isn't going anywhere. So, we'll have to call this one a fair border exchange for now and let Jeff off the hook. Next year though, I believe the state of PA will be installing those invisible fences all around the border. So yeah, any horses in PA will eventually not be allowed to leave the state at some point in the near future, ha! stevebo-(Moderator) 8,528 #18 Posted December 26, 2014 Jeff Looking very good. I really like the look and feel of that style steering wheel. I have a new seat over here in the wrapper for you as a Christmas gift for all your help. It is not a 3 piece seat but one of the ones like on my 520H from ken.

oldredrider 2,553 #20 Posted December 26, 2014 As far as rusting horses out of PA., remember how Johnny Cash got his Cadillac...one piece at a time!

The Authorities and the Border Patrol gave you a one time pass on that deal and decided to let it slide.... Next time you will need a permit or you will run the risk of having your Wheel Horse goods confiscated!
fireman 1,022 #22 Posted December 27, 2014 So I was heading over to Steve's today and was gonna bring the 120 over to the Ponderosa and stretch its wheels. I rolled it out of the shop and tried to start it. No go. Checked spark and it was good. Check fuel, seamed to be getting it. Pulled off the air cleaner and used some starting fluid. Still no go. Then I noticed some fuel/oil slightly bubbling from under the washer of one of the head bolts close to the spark plug. I snugged them all down and still no go. So I rolled it back in the shop and headed out. A few hours later after I got back from Steve's, had dinner, then headed into the shop. Pulled the engine tins and the head off. The head gasket has dark and kind of oily near the 3 bolt holes closet to the spark plug. The valve and seat along with the piston has a lot of carbon built up. I cleaned all of that and started on the head. It also had a lot of carbon on the underside and a lot of dirt packed in the fins on the side that is covered by the tin. I took a look at the fins of the block and the side covered by the tins and the air passage between the valves and the jug in the block was also completely plugged with dirt. I cleaned all of the that out and cleaned up the surfaced of the block and head. The head gasket still looks in great shape so I cleaned it up. Cleaned up all the head bolts and proceeded to re-assemble everything. I confirmed the torque for the head bolts and the correct pattern. Now everything is all put back together and tomorrow morning I will try to fire it and see what happens. I hope there is no heat damage to the head, block or valve seats due to the air flow being block for god knows how long. We'll see what happens!

ericj 1,579 #25 Posted December 27, 2014 i guess you found the reason it smokes a little when started. i don't care if it's an onan kohler or briggs when they are not kept clean under the tins that allows heat build up and will eventually kill an air cooled motor eric j
