Friction discs on snowblowers ?

Recommended Posts

Got a non-Wheel Horse question .

Just got done with one of my moms driveways ( the 50 footer ) & she has a Craftsman ( <  i know , I know ) Maybe '92 or 94 . The thing runs awesome , throws awesome but I find I have to help it along & drag it back up the driveway while it's trying to get there itself.

I'm assuming this is an issue with the friction discs & have never messed with one of these systems before .

I'll have a chance to look at it in the middle of next week & am just wondering what I'm getting into ?

Is the contact between the drive & driven discs adjustable somehow ?

Looking at some of the 'fiche , it isn't clear how the contact ( or ) pressure is made .

Or is this simply a case of a overly smooth disc contacting a worn / dry-rotted  rubber bonded ring on the drive disc .

Thanks for reading this long-winded post .

You will see those discs right away when you take off the bottom plate covering those components. Inspect the rubber ring on the one disc for signs of cracking, dry rot or missing pieces. I have fixed a few without replacing the disc by lightly sanding both contact surfaces to remove any glazing to create more friction. (But the rubber was still good) Also check for signs of water in there. They'll lose friction when wet so closing off any way snow and water can enter will help.

BUT, you will definitely notice a big difference if you replace that rubber disc and lightly sand the flat disc surface.

The contact tension is created by a spring connected to the handle used to engage the drive. Too weak of a spring or broken parts will let it slip too. Most have some type of adjustment to apply more tension but be careful not to adjust too tight! Look inside the spring, the end of the cable is probably threaded with a nut on it.

Hope this helps,

Yep , sure does !

I did a search on You-Tube & found the advice on the spring ( video helps a lot ) .

If they lift our driving ban today , going to scoot over to moms & rip it down .

Makes me think now .... my little Ariens is getting a bit sluggish in reverse too  :eusa-think: .
