Deer Whisperer 66 #1 Posted November 21, 2014 A new auger is over 700.00. The chain gear on the end of the auger is worn down so the chain is slipping. Has anyone replaced the chain sproket with out buying a new auger. The blower was bought in 1995 with my 520H and wore out. Thank you. Deer Whisperer

wallfish 15,964 #4 Posted November 21, 2014 Check here at Surplus Center. Lots of good stuff for DIYer with reasonable prices on most things. Might as well change the chain too while your at it. http://www.surpluscenter.com/Sprockets/Hubless-Plate-Sprockets/

Kurt-NEPA 755 #6 Posted November 22, 2014 When I bought a snow blower for my 520H it had the same problem. I cut off the old sprocket and very carefully ground it down to flush with the shaft. I bought a new sprocket ( with a machinable hub) from McMaster Carr. I machined the hub to the correct inside diameter to fit the shaft. It took some careful massaging of the auger shaft, but I got it to fit nice and tight. Then I cross drilled the hub to fit a 1/4" bolt and bolted it in place. The bolt acts as a shear pin. So far it has worked well, if I have excessive problems with the bolt shearing, I can always drill it out to 5/16". The problem here is that you need a lathe or at least a local machine shop to turn out the sprocket. In any case the repair cost me about $60 and a few hours time. Even it the machine shop cost you $100, that's a lot better than $700 I thought about welding the sprocket on too, That is still an option for me. Anyway, that is what I did. Best of luck with yours.

Deer Whisperer 66 #8 Posted December 10, 2014 Thanks for all your help. Got the gear from T.S for 20 bucks and had it welded for 40. Took the bends out of the auger and ready for primer and paint.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,530 #9 Posted December 10, 2014 Make sure you replace the chain. It is a worn and stretched chain that wears the sprocket teeth. A #40 chain is 1/2" pitch - that is the distance center to center between the pins and rollers. As the chain wears that pitch increases to lets say 9/16" (it's not actually that much) so now the rollers have to ride higher on the sprocket teeth where they rest at the 9/16" location and that is a weaker part of the sprocket teeth. Deer Whisperer 66 #10 Posted December 11, 2014 YUP,Have a new chain ready to mount and also put in new bearings. The only concern is the sprocket is made in china.
chevrat68 19 #11 Posted December 15, 2014 Just replaced my sprocket. I bought a sprocket and 10 ft of chain. 15 for each at the big bearing store on line. Used hole saw to enlarge opening and welded it up.
Deer Whisperer 66 #12 Posted December 15, 2014 I have a second blower to fix so will try the hole saw this time. Chevrat could you explain a little more detail how you did this. Thanks
chevrat68 19 #13 Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) Sorry just read your post. I welded a nut that fit inside the sprocket and used it as a guide for the arbor on the hole saw. Bigpat5123 27 #14 Posted May 7, 2015 Anyone know the tooth count for the sprocket and a shaft diameter?
Kurt-NEPA 755 #15 Posted May 8, 2015 From my notes on the sprocket Sprocket, for ANSI No. 40 Roller Chain, 1/2" Pitch, 30 Teeth I don't recall the shaft diameter.
Bigpat5123 27 #16 Posted May 8, 2015 Thank you that's what I thought. Shaft measures 1 7/8" with a set of calipers
