Coley909 12 #1 Posted November 2, 2014 Today I bought my very first wheel horse a 1965 1075 with a 10 hp Kohler. I was talking to the owner who had quite a few wheel horses. He mentioned that these motors don't use engine oil but instead use transmission fluid. I thought he misspoke but again said transmission fluid. I read the original manual and it lists the oil weight in them. Now I'm really confused. I may call him again tomorrow but I'd like to check with everyone on here. Thank you

Sparky-(Admin) 23,139 #6 Posted November 2, 2014 The motor should use 30wt.....the hydro tranny probably is what he was talking about. Yours is an early hydro and they used ATF in them Mike............
Coley909 12 #7 Posted November 2, 2014 Thanks Mike I think your right, he mentioned using gm atf fluid. Also gave me some filters. The way he spoke about it just confused me so much. He mentioned something about converting it for regular oil as well.
AMC RULES 37,196 #8 Posted November 2, 2014 Sparky's got it right... your PO was referring to the transmission... do not put ATF in your engine, then expect good results.

Coley909 12 #10 Posted November 2, 2014 Ok so you could run engine oil in the transmission. Gotcha
rmaynard 16,292 #11 Posted November 2, 2014 (edited) Ok so you could run engine oil in the transmission. Gotcha Sort of... SAE 30W is what was recommended for engines, and later model hydros used 10W30 or 10W40 motor oil. Here is a snapshot taken from the 1075 owners manual. ericj 1,579 #12 Posted November 2, 2014 you can run engine oil 10w30 or 10w40 in the hydro trans on the early one and as stated above the later one called for it. bur if you want you can run automatic trans fluid in the early hydro's. if it was me i would run the motor oil in mine if i had to change it eric j
Coley909 12 #13 Posted November 2, 2014 I just wanted to change the motor oil. I'll probably leave the transmission alone.
