stevebo-(Moderator) 8,502 #1 Posted October 16, 2014 Today I tried to start one of my 702's to run treated gas through it but only to find no spark. Pulled the hood off to check for spark and upon inspecting the coil this is what I found. Wonder how this could happen? Any ideas? Anyone see this before? Looks like my kid hit it with a hammer.... stevebo-(Moderator) 8,502 #6 Posted October 17, 2014 There was no way to get to the coil as the hood was on it. It happened on it's own somehow? Maybe exploded?

bmsgaffer 2,052 #9 Posted October 17, 2014 (edited) Yea i would say the coil overheated. Assuming you didn't leave the key on: I'll bet the coil was failing internally (coils were shorting) and getting mighty hot, it probably blew right as you were shutting her down last time and just didnt notice it over the sound of the engine coming to a stop. Just a theory... At least it didnt look like this (about 0:15 when the boiling transformer oil goes): Edited October 17, 2014 by bmsgaffer
Ken B 3,175 #10 Posted October 17, 2014 There have been a few issues with keys being left on up on the Ponderosa... Hasn't the 520 you picked up from me picked up a few extra hrs in silent mode?
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,502 #11 Posted October 17, 2014 I need to buy a new coil. Everytime I go to buy one I get asked what type of coil? Forgive my ignorance here but I think they ask if I want an insulated or non insulated one? Anyone can help with what to ask for or perhaps a napa part number? VinsRJ 723 #12 Posted October 17, 2014 I have seen these explode in the past...
km3h 543 #13 Posted October 17, 2014 Coils come in several voltages. Some require a ballast resistor. You want a coil for an early model GM car. 1975 Chevy will do nicely.
N3PUY 1,031 #14 Posted October 17, 2014 The coil I use is a TruTec # UC-15T. I pay $9.39 for that one. The Standard Motor Products # is UC-15 and is about $14.00 . You can get them at an automotive parts store. The coil actually states on it "NO EXTERNAL RESISTOR REQUIRED".

bmsgaffer 2,052 #19 Posted October 18, 2014 There have been a few issues with keys being left on up on the Ponderosa... Hasn't the 520 you picked up from me picked up a few extra hrs in silent mode? That reminded me of a 91-92 520 for sale around here one time with like 1600+ hours on it. Owner stated that they left the keys on all winter till the battery died, which accounted for several hundred hours.... Upon my recent acquisition of a 520 and my subsequent research: every 520 (and I believe most WH's) sometime after 1990 (i dont have the exact year) had the hour meter tied into the oil pressure switch, so it wont run if the engine is not running... Luckily I didn't buy them and live and learn!
