GT-14 shall live again !!!!!!

This is my inexpensive GT14.  ($20)  The previous owner had a K301A motor mounted on it and that just wasn't going to work!

  He gave me this K301S and I installed it.  I don't have any history on this motor so I didn't know what to expect.  First attempt to fire it up with carb cleaner was a success!  Looked like Westley's garage on "Last of the Summer Wine".  Smoke rollin out the door!  That was yesterday.  This morning I put somemore parts on the motor and tried to start it with the temporary fuel cell.   Would not start, no fuel to the carb.   Removed the fuel pump and disassembled.  I never saw so much rust in such a small space.  (sorry, no pic of that)   Wash it in the sink, reassembled and installed.   Restart?  YES!  It runs on it's own :) .  Even took it for a ride around the yard.  Not too good up hills but the belt is way too long and slips.  OK ... it's back to the garage.  Here's the pics.

A little more done this afternoon .... removed fenders and washed.    I really think the belt is toooooo long.  But the spring on the tension pulley is wrong too.

  And the holes for the shafts are worn ... really big! 

And there's only 2 bolts attaching the transaxle to the frame. 2 bolts must have been too difficult for someone to put in.

Did a little work on the GT14 yesterday ..... took off the front muffler so I can remount the stack.   Of course the bolts broke off.  But I needed the threaded part anyways.  Took awhile to clean out the threads.  It looks good.

Test fitting the muffler.  Should there be a brace on it someplace?

Looks like its coming along nicely!

Most guys say you need a support......but I never have. I feel that if the threaded stub goes into the block nice and deep you don't need the support.

I really don't know what the muffler was originally used on.   The only thing I see on it is "STANLEY MUFFLER".  Hmmmm ..... the tractor needs a name .... I'll call him Stanley!

 

   I just found out that Stanley mufflers are sold at TSC.

Supporting the stack is good insurance. A buddy of mine had a GT-14 with a stack...unsupported.

While he was backing up the tractor (and looking toward the rear) the stack dropped down and melted a big hole in that expensive plastic gas tank.

Potentially explosive situation. Cost about $100 to replace the tank.

Food for thought.

I had a GT14 and now everytime  I push or pull with my 417A I compare it to the GT.Dont get me wrong I wouldn't take anything for my A. Well maybe that's a little strong,I would trade it for Kate Upton,but she must not be getting my emails.

OK I'm back from dreamland. You will love that tractor, like Kate its a beautiful thing.

I got bushings (½x5/8x¾) for the 2 cross shafts for the belt tensioner and parking brake.  Had to ream the holes out to 5/8". And reduce the thickness of the bushing flange. One pic is a comparison of the one remaining original bushing and the ones I put in. 

Fit tight and no more slop!  Now I can measure for the tension spring.  4 bushings $21 .... total now $41.00.

Well, I got a little more done. Only about another 99 hours of restore to go! I got the air filter and intake ready thanks to "HORSE JUNKIE". And I test fit the headlights. I made the lens.

You do know that the rear tires are Not correct. The normal tire is a 27.50 x 9.50 x 15 with the four lug bolt pattern. You'll have numerous additions or changes. We'll help ya out when and where we can.

Oh yeah, the lights look good. Your on a roll keep it up, for the money invested you should come out with a decent tractor.

15", 4-bolt .... got 'em.   They came with the tractor.  But the PO still has the hubs!

Well, I haven't done much on the GT-14 this week.   I did change the headlight bulbs to LED.  I didn't do it for more light .... it was just to be different.  And the reflector behind them is silver glitter tape.  They sure don't make light like the 1156 bulbs did.  Here's a close-up of one.
