Boat gas tank paint type??

Recommended Posts

All-

I am getting ready to repaint one of my old vintage metal boat gas tanks. I remember several years ago I repainted one and after I spilled a little bit of gas on the paint it peeled really bad. Can you tell me what type of paint I can use that will not peel if paint gets on it?? Thanks

Paint that will not peel paint? :ychain:  My rustoleum on the tractors has not peeled if it is fully cured when gas gets on it.

TEMPO THAT MAKES THE TANK USED TO SELL PAINT FOR THE TANKS. TRY A MARINE STORE. I WILL CHECK TOMMOROW AT OUR MARINA.

The vast majority of antique outboarder's don't repaint their tanks due to the fact that they see so much fuel dumped on them that they wind up peeling. I have used the guy at NY Marine's paint and it worked excellent. I've also used Duplicolor engine paints and their engine paint clear coat. You must follow the directions and ya gotta let it cure. A lot of the guys that have "show boats" have "show" tanks that see no gas, they use an unpainted tank when they plan to use the boat...

I haven't tried the Rustoleum Farm & Implement IH red yet but Roscoe is right, I've spilled gas on it before and if its cured it hasn't peeled. I'd use a self etching primer for sure. What paint did you use a few yrs. ago that peeled?

I find the Duplicolor Engine paints to be durable also.

Honestly it was more like 20 years ago and I have no idea what it was. I think I may try the duplicolor ford red engine paint. That seems to be a close match. I just cleaned and coated the inside of one of the tanks I have. I

I have spilled plenty of gas on my WH hoods, and the paint hasn't peeled yet. Nothing special or fancy. I think curing is the real thing.

Usually a 2K epoxy paint would have the best chemical resistance.

Google search for "fuel proof paint" suggests either an automotive bc/cc or an epoxy paint.   :handgestures-thumbsup:

Epoxy paints come in one or two components plus a reducer.  Single part epoxy paints are OK and are better than enamels for corrosion and chemical resistance but a true 2 part or 2K epoxy is best for chemical resistance.  Oil refinery tanks that hold gas and components to make gas all are lined with special 2K epoxy systems.  Where epoxy paints fall short is they don't do well in the sun, they chalk bad fast.  That is where a 2K urethane topcoat makes an excellent system.  CARC paint on Military stuff is a moisture cure or 2 K water based urethane with a 2K epoxy underneath...
