Not new to Wheel Horse

I have not seen a single Wheel Horse tractor anywhere in the state of Louisiana...what gives?  If I see a Wheel Horse tractor along the road, I will slam the brakes on to go look at it.  Probably nuts like most of you.  This is how I found my C-141.  It was parked, forlorn, at a John Deere dealer in Grinnell, Iowa.  I slammed on the brakes "to have a look" and after a test run, I had the tractor delivered to my house later that day.  Back in 1966 Dad bought a brand new 606 from Caola's in Trenton, New Jersey.  (Caola's is still in business) I had a thriving lawn business at age 12, and was certainly one of the first Wheel Horse hot rodders.  The "peaky" Tecumseh 6 h.p. power plant could easily be coaxed well beyond its red line (whatever that was) and it sounded remarkably like a Ferrari 365 GTB at full song.  Remove the mower deck and spectacular wheelies were possible.  The higher horse power machines could not pull wheelies like the 606 because of their heavy Kohler cast iron engines.  By age 13 I could go from wheelie contest back to my lawn mowing business in minutes.  We even had a road course for our tractors in the woods across the street from our house.  Sadly, I destroyed the mighty Tecumseh and it was sent back to Caola's for a replacement.  I asked to keep the old engine, which I took apart and reassembled replacing only the head gasket.  ( I was only 12 after all)  That old Tecumseh went on to power Dads chipper/shredder well into the late 1980s...when he sold it.  So, who know Wheel Horse people in Louisiana?  I left the C-141 in Iowa and would like another C-141 or C-161 8-speed...

Thanks Frank and Craig.  I have spotted some in Arkansas but finding a nice machine within a 200 mile radius would be great.  Pick-up and trailer is preferred.  I would be open to shipping one down here from up north to get the right machine.  C-161, 141 preferred with a 48 inch mower deck.  I also prefer the 8-speed over the hydro.

Stu,

There are 2 horse nuts quite near you. Im Bill Pace out in Greenwood and groundhog44 (Gerry) is in Shreveport, we're both retired and dabble in WH's a lot. In fact just this morning we were in my shop doing machine work for an 8 speed.

I have a D-180, a D-160, and a C-175 running and about 3 other rollers, just sold an extensive re-furbed 1054 and a C-100.

Send a PM and we'll exchange contact info and maybe we can locate you a horse.

Hi Bill-  I work with a guy named Bill Pace.  Any relation?    What I want to do is replace the C-141 with 48" deck I sold up in Iowa...without having to go to far to get it.  It will have to be ready to work and be clean and in good repair.

The member map shows at least 3 members from your state....add yourself and make it 4!

Maybe you should count your blessings....if a Wheel Horse comes up for sale on Connecticut Craigslist there's about 50 guys all over it....ASAP!!!

I have my 25A fuse blowing every time I put a new one in the slot. The old one was burnt up when I got the tractor put this year. It sat for a year with a dead battery. I stopped using it as much because the transmission is clattering pretty bad when taking off on second or higher. I had to replace the clutch belt a few years ago and couldn't get an OEM. Not sure what is the problem there that's another issue though.

I have checked the wiring and patched the worn spots where it could be grounding out. The fuse blows as soon as there is power to the system with the ignition off. I'm at a loss of what to check for at this point. Any input from someone who has had this issue would be appreciated. I'm not sure what these units are in the photos but do not know how to test them for a failure. They are directly in loop with the battery and the ignition loom looks to run into that 25A fuse.

      Hi Red Square Community,

I am looking into purchasing the below pictured "POND" Walk Away. The unit itself has the cast in “POND” on the chain reduction housing. The two main things I am looking to learn are what value is typical for these to sell for. This one has a Briggs & Stratton model “N” engine. It runs and drives, but the throttle linkage needs some adjusting. It comes with a cultivator and plow implement.

Secondly, I was wondering if there is any way to determine what year specifically this Pond is from. The seller believes late 1940s and not 1950s. I am new to these machines, so I am looking for some guidance. Thank you in advance!

i know that there is ebb and flow with market conditions, but I have been seeing bargain 520 and c-160 prices more common. I recently saw a c-160 like model on a place other than here that was close by, but i did not get a chance to see it as I was still on a medical tether getting care. i say c-i60 like model because it was a series of numbers like 4455 or somesuch .Tractor had the k series engine clearly a sixteen HP and came with a decent looking deck and pusher blade. i called my buddy Jay and told him for the $250 ask , he better hustle after it. i really do not know if he did.
I also have been seeing 520s and such lower than I can remember as well as the D series..My theory is that people experiencing paycheck to paycheck living are increasing in number.
You even are seeing a lot more older trucks like square bodies and especially big blocks than you did before. we used to see this a lot in new trucks when fuel prices hit records.
i am not claiming expert status on this, but it seems to be trending this way one county next to indiana and 90 miles North of the Ohio River.
Tell me what you are seeing out there and what you think.
Edit:  Jay and I ran up to buy Bob Ellison's tractor in MI.  Bob was very nice to deal with and included his "last seat"   I got super lucky buying my first C-160 that did not start and another one shortly dropped in to keep it company. The tractor described above was listed for only two days and was gone
