Digger 66 3,488 #1 Posted May 3, 2014 Tuesday the Army Corps of Engineers removed the Ice-Boom . This yearly ritual was done the latest it's ever been done since 1971 . The Corps strings floating tubular pieces of pipe on the upper Niagara river ( above The Falls ) from Canada To the U.S. side just above the Peace Bridge . It's placed so that the Ice floes don't migrate downstream & plug the intakes of the Power Authority turbine intakes farther downstream . 240 square miles of corralled ice makes our weather 10 to 15 degrees cooler when west /southwest winds blow . Now summer can un-officially get under way . Here's some shots ( bottom one is looking over the Niagara river west towards Canada ) just north of downtown Buffalo . AMC RULES 37,195 #2 Posted May 3, 2014 I remember seeing somewhere, as of two weeks ago... 40% of the total area of the great lakes was still covered by ice this year.
