Is the economy affecting your work?

Recommended Posts

hodge

I am a tile setter/flooring installer, and although I have had steady work up till now, it is slowing down quickly. A customer put it succinctly the other day- "we want to do new counter tops, but not until the economy is better". Can't blame her. Do any of you have a job that is directly affected by the state of our economy? And, do you need a new floor installed?????

I'm not sure, but I'd guess the economy is affecting my work... More people stealing, therefore... more inmates... :banghead: I work for the Indiana Department of Correction... (correctional officer)

I sure hope things change with this economy.... Makes it hard for lots of people. :USA:

Compared to last year I would say I am anywhere from 12,000 to 15,000 dollars behind from where I was at last year at this time! And believe me it makes Life Rough! Burly

Yes, its affected my job.

But more noticable to me is that everything costs more, and wages havent increased in 5 years. So I'm still earning the same, but its not going as far.

And layoffs seem to be a normal thing these days. Ask me again in two weeks....

Yep. We are down something like 400,000 a month in business, have 25-30 trucks sitting.. being in the transportation industry we feel it pretty quickly when things take a turn for the worse..

I am on a dedicated account hauling parts for Toyota ...they have shut down a plant in indiana and texas which REALLY hurt cause we picked up freight for both of these plants.. so now we run more stops picking up stuff, for only a few more miles...

Used to be all longer routes, now its common to run 5 or 6 stops for only 500 miles.. but im still working so I'll not complain.

I'm retired. The only work I do is mow the yard and rebuild my Charger 12. And it doesn't bother that at all! :banghead:

Social Security check comes the 3rd. of each month, and I get a SMALL Disability Pension Check on the 15th. of each month.

I don't make any less money than I did 5 years ago, but I also DON'T make any more, and we all know how the cost of living has increased in the last 5 years :omg: .

So, while I won't complain :banghead: . With my health the way it is, I am sure glad to be here bitching about things :USA: . But I do wish I could stretch the old buck a little more ............

The economy has not affected my job at all concerning lay-offs, but it has affected it as far as safety is concerned. I, like Jon, have felt it by theft. People just do not understand that by stealing the copper that all power companies use, they endanger not only their lives but our lives too. I am a lineman for AEP, Indiana/Michigan division and people just don't realize that the copper you see running from the top of the pole to the bottom is there to protect them and all their belongings in their homes. Without this ground established, the neutral going to your house has the same potential as the hot legs which in turn could kill you just by touching your stove, refrigerator, etc. :banghead: Sorry to go off on a tangent... Just something I feel passionately about.

Anyway, my job is secure as long as people need power. :USA:

Ya should mean, as long as people can pay for power.. But I dont really think it'll get that bad this time around .

Work has picked up for us again, our weekly mileage is going from 4300 back up to just over 4600 might not seem like much, BUT... those 300 equate to a fair amount of $$

I work in a car dealership, fixing the junk. I don't make any money unless I work on something. With the economy the way it is nobody can afford to fix what they've got,and can't afford to buy a new one.We had a guy in the other day with a credit score over 700 and couldn't get anyone to finance a car for him.Now I am working two jobs just to get the bills paid.My wife is a little pissed thatwe never see each other anymore but if I cant pay the bills we won't have a home to live in.I HOPE SOMEONE FIXES THIS MESS SOON!!!!

Hmm, maybe we should be looking for a way to market all the WH skills on here...

GT consultants, Restoration Specialists, etc. There has to be some way to take this hobby and make more money than by selling parts... :banghead:

I work in the steel industry and we are getting hit HARD.

As of today 90% of the mills have cut back at least 30% production. One mill has will cease production next week ( 1.5 million tons a year 2500 workers) and target date to start back up is Jan 4th maybe. Another is reducing by 50%, 500 to 1000 there are being layed off.

To our company this in turn will hurt us as we are a presence in all steel glass and foundries worldwide.

Usually the steel, glass and foundry industries are the first hit when the economy starts slowing down and are the first to start picking backup. This time we only felt a little 3-4 weeks ago and since monday all these reduced productions and plant closures have been announced.

I have heard that even the overseas mills are reducing production.

Only time will tell how far we go down the rabbit hole.

In the military, war still going on so planes keep flying. Our C-5's fly so they break. Heck, they break just sitting on the ramp! Would rather they not be flying for that reason though, wish they were flying everybody and all that equipment home.

I work for General Electric and were scheduled to shut down next year and relocate in Mexico. :banghead:

But besides that, were only working 1 week on and 2 weeks off. We still get decent pay while were off. I'm sure the worse is yet to come. <_<

Sadly it also explains why scrap values are tanking, too, doesn't it?

Here's a prayer for better times ahead.........
