D-160 hydro problems

Recommended Posts

dewdew

Some of you may have read previous post on my hydro trouble withe my D I am in a position that I need to get this thing moving and not do a full restore on it yet. So I thought I would put some pics of what my problem is and hopefully someone will have an idea that will get this thing running. I have had suggestions on replace/ rebuilding the pump but I'm not ready to do that so if there is a work around for that that would be nice. Any feed back is helpful. Thank you!

Mike,

Ps it's just the first three pics. Sorry I'm new to pb.

LFDRET

I had to replace my pump with a used one. It is not that hard of a job - from the pic's you have, I would say that is your only option. I would be concerned what made it break? most just strip the splines on the coupler and the shaft.

Before I did anything I would do some research on why the shaft broke like that. As LFDRET said most strip the splines…That is a serious FUBAR on your shaft. Your only hope is to yank it. CHeck with Kelly on here or Joes Outdoor Power on ebay. Both are good guys and will treat ya right. Getting that pump out of its home is the most brutal thing to do on these. I hated doing mine and had to do it 3 times before I just got smart and bought a good used pump from Kelly and used the other 3 to make 1 good pump which I sold. Any plans you have to just throw something together to get you through will only haunt you in the long run. Do it once and do it right. This is no place for cobb jobs and shortcuts. It will only bite you in the end. :banghead:  :angry-nono:  :ranting:  I know you really don't want to  hear that and just want to throw it together with a bandaid on a bullet wound. If it was as easy as pulling a wheel and yanking  the hydro motor I would say shoot for your duct tape fix but with the amount of work it is to get the pump out, do it right. Just my  :twocents-02cents: .  I hate to  :deadhorse:

Ughhhh!! I know I gotta pull it. This was a last ditch effort before I start working on it this weekend. And most likeley pull out what hair I have left. Ha, I am having trouble finding a whole pump though. But I have been in contact with a member that has been very helpfull in the parts and knowledge behind rebuilding mine.

And I know the original owner of this machine and he told me that the splins did strip so he took it to the dealer about 10 yrs ago and they drilled a hole in the shaft and put a bolt through it. I'm assuming that the hole caused a week point in it and that's where it broke.

Thanks for all the bad news guys!

Just kidding I appreciate all your help with both of my horses. Thnx again mike,

The dealer should have been shot.  You do not need necessarily to replace the pump just the shaft.  I probably have a shaft (but it will need a speedi sleeve). if you are up to pulling the pump and breaking it down.

I'm not sure what a speedi sleeve is? But if It would be a proper fix I would love to try it. What will it take to get a shaft from you?

The speedi sleeve is a thin metal band that cover up groves in the surface  seal runs on.  For this application it is #99076 from SKF and my dealer wants $26 for this small band.  The seal CR 7475 is $11.

I will try to get a picture of teh shaft later today.

You will have to remove the pump to change the shaft.  While you have it out as others said you need to get the manual from here and tear the pump down. The shafts do not usually break but in your case having some idiot drill a hole in it may have been the cause....

This is the shaft I have.  It will need a speedie sleeve where I indicated or the seal will not work for long.  The splines are not perfect and you nay have to dress them a bit with some emory cloth to let the speedi sleeve slip by them.  Over time the splines get a bit deformed and come to a point instead of a flat edge.

Here is listing for seal and sleeve

PM me your address you can have the shaft if you will use it.

Do you have the rubber connector that attaches the shaft to the engine??

Does anyone know if there is a service manual specific to the hydro systems on this? Or just the pump/motor
