Found a super clean 97 suburban 2500 with all maint records. Has 160k, is that to much? he is asking 6k. What should I look for? Is 4500 to much of a loball? I just want a large 4x4 suv for my 10mile commute and bopping around.

Have you Kelly Blue booked it for a referance? I just did and gave it all sorts of options and rated it in excellent condition.....at the most it came out at $2988. Even $4500 is way to much in my opinion Will.

I'm bored so I redid it with a diesel engine and it only went up $400.

I am just surprised that Will is interested in a 97 Chevy.....

@Will-

He is asking WAY too much. I sold my 03 Z71 Tahoe (loaded) with less miles about 3 years ago for $7600. I also struggled to sell my 95 blazer in nice shape for $1600. You should have bought that !!

Back in 2000, I had a '95 Chevy 2WD 2500 Suburban with the 5.7 engine and 3.54 rear end. Gas mileage was way better with that than my current '01 GMC 2WD 2500 extended cab pickup with the 8.1 engine and 4.10 rear. Big blocks burn about the same amount of fuel either running empty or towing/loaded.

I always enjoyed having the Suburban other than the lousy turning radius in parking garages. Even with 2WD, the snow in Illinois never stopped me. I would shoot a price even lower than what you had thought was low.

Guys I am thinkin of selling the f250 it sits at the train station 6 days a week. And brings me back and forth 10 miles each way. I dont get to use it as I thought I would, hauling and plowing a lot. It is to nice of a truck to just sit in a lot. I just need a reliable 4wd that I will pay cash and not mind sitting at the station. I just like suburbans and excursions. And steve I would have bought the blazer at that price, though I want fullsize. Wife has 13 highlander so we can use that for long trips.

Our 98 GMC 1500 2wd has 295k on it and it has had no major work besides replacing the intake manifold gasket due to a coolant leak, and maybe an alternator. They are great trucks!

$6000 seems like a lot for a 15 year old suburban. I don't know about in NJ, but they are far too common around here to command that kind of money. Also, the used car market (while hot in the past few years since the economy down turn) is not as strong as it was. I have been trying to sell my loaded, 2008, 4 cylinder, 6 speed manual, nissan altima for over 2 months and have only had 1 hit. It is priced at $1k under blue book, and $500 under NADA value, and $1000 dollars over what Carmax offered.

4x4 3/4 ton suburbans are not that common, shouldn't be too hard to find. Make sure the expensive things like tires are in good shape. It is a 17 year old vehicle and the little things can add up. I don't think 4500 is low ball. You could even try 4000 and justify the number by the blue book value. Or maybe you could feel around, mentioning that you looked up the blue book value and that he is a little high. Ask him if he is willing to negotiate before you even make an offer. Like wheel horses, condition is everything. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for something that is well taken care of with low "hours".

I bought my 98 1500 GMC Suburban with 234,000 miles on it. It had 44,000 miles on a new crate 5.7 and new GM tranny. Also a new transfer case and front diff. The P.O.'s daughter drove it home from college in a snowstorm in low range for about 130 miles at 50mph and wrecked all those parts. The p.o. is also my boss so the company had it repaired by the local GMC dealer. I have all the paperwork on it. I paid $2400.00 for it 2 years ago. It now has app 270,000 miles on it. I like it because we can take 7 passengers if necessary. Then lay the front row of seats down and take out the rear seat and haul sheetrock in the rain. It isn't too bad on gas either about, 16 in town and close to 20 on the highway. It is getting rusty though. I think that price is about $4000 too high. I just saw a 99 suburban with 170,000 mi. for $1999.00. My brother is going to look at it tomorrow. Happy Hunting

My 99 was a major pita when it came time to get parts.

It seems gm was using up their supply of old body style parts to build them

I think there was a choice of six different size ball joint sizes , I had to change the trans but only

Trans from 98.5-99 would work, silly stuff like that

Actually it was quite simple with a parts guy who new what he was doing. Gm had 2 lines of trucks from 87 on up.They had the normal C,K series that every one knew about but also the R,V series which used the old sheet metal, axles ect. I was working at a Chevy dealer from 86 to 2004 then at a Napa. When at Napa the shops would call and say I got a K 2500 and I would say are you sure look at the sheet metal. They thought I was nuts! I educated a ton of guys and saved them a lot of trouble. I'm out of the auto business now. When I run into an old customer, they say how much they miss me. :)
