zanepetty 117 #1 Posted February 9, 2014 So now the gasket between the two halves of my fuel pump is leakin along with my nipple coming out of my tank, and sediment bowl. I couldn't find gasket material as thin as the stuff that came out of my fuel pump. Should I/could I buy a new pump or is there an easy fix? Thanks so much in advance. Sorry for all the questions its just that nobody around here knows anything about small engines.
joel_400 59 #2 Posted February 9, 2014 You might be able to fix it without buying any parts. Take the pump completely apart and find a good flat surface. I use a piece of 1/4 inch tempered glass, cause my mom works at a glass shop and got it for me, and a piece of 120 grit sandpaper. Just sand the surfaces where the diaphragm mates until they are completely flat. You will be able to tell by the sanding scratches on the surfaces. You may also do the surface where the pump mounts to the block since they warp there too. Then put it all back together and tighten the screws evenly in a criscross pattern to avoid warping it again. Also dont overtighten the mounting screws to avoid warpage there also. Hope this helps. If you do need a rebuild kit for the pump they are available but I cant remember the name of the company. If nobody chimes in with that I will see what i can find.
zanepetty 117 #3 Posted February 9, 2014 Thanks. What do I use the glass for? And everything is on the engine so sanding the block would be hard at this point.
chazm 413 #4 Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) If the fuel pump is leaking it will need to come off if our going to repair it or replace it. Here's a after market replacement pump http://amcpartsstore.com/Replace-Kohler-Fuel-Pump-4755904S-4755911S/M/B001OK4GQE.htm Edited February 9, 2014 by chazm
squonk 43,939 #5 Posted February 9, 2014 Here's the site that sells the parts or you can ship your pump there and they will do it for you. Or you can get that same pump chaszm listed at any Napa store. http://www.maritimedragracing.com/then_and_now_automotive.htm
rmaynard 16,372 #6 Posted February 9, 2014 Is it a vacuum or mechanical pump?
zanepetty 117 #7 Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) Nice. Well I might just try to go to Napa and get one. I like the idea of keeping the original metal one but I can't have it leaking. Its a mechanical pump, Bob. I was told it might stop seaping after a few days? Edited February 9, 2014 by zanepetty
rmaynard 16,372 #8 Posted February 9, 2014 I had a mechanical one that pumped okay, but continued to seep at the diaphragm. I took the two halves apart, sanded them on a flat surface, then carefully added a small amount of Teflon pipe sealant to both surfaces, snugged the screws and have not had a leak since.
zanepetty 117 #9 Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) Can I get the tape at Napa, Bob? I have yamabond #4 and some fuel safe thread sealer as well. Edited February 9, 2014 by zanepetty
rmaynard 16,372 #10 Posted February 9, 2014 It's not tape, it is a paste.
zanepetty 117 #11 Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) Oh OK. I have yamabond #4 and fuel safe pipe thread sealer. But if you had good luck with that I'll use that. Where did you get it? Also would it be bad to use that around the o ring in my sediment bowl? Edited February 9, 2014 by zanepetty

Also would it be bad to use that around the o ring in my sediment bowl? Don't use pipe dope on the bowl o-ring... best to smear a LITTLE oil on the o-ring to help seal , I believe those o-rings are a square cut type o-ring ... if it is be sure it isn 't twisted
zanepetty 117 #13 Posted February 9, 2014 Well when I took the bowl off to re- seat it, the o ring got a lump in it that can't be mashed back down. It was very thin. I think its just warped now. So I don't know of I can find one that size or if I need to just get another bowl. Or do away with the bowl and replace it with something that won't leak. scotty 252 #14 Posted February 16, 2014 You can do away with the bowl just put a shut off on and a inline fuel filter
wheel-mule 46 #15 Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) I have new fuel bowls.I can sell you one with an extra new gasket (in case you ever need it)for $16 and that includes shipping.I still like to use a inline filter as extra protection. Send me a pm if you want one. Edited February 16, 2014 by wheel-mule
