Governor Gear failure????

As I was taking my dads 16hp kohler apart so I could get it to the machine shop I noticed this little surprise and I was wondering what causes governor gear failure the cam did have more play than I would of be comfortable with I did have a metal one to replace it with

Not buy us but the old owner well let's say more than likely the frame was broke in three places so I say it didn't have an easy life till dad got a hold of it and put it on a charger 10 was on a c160 auto

It ran good used a lot of oil though

The nylon gears will wear out on the shaft if the engine is run with low or dirty oil. Wear causes wobble and chewed or broken teeth.

That gear is far from the sump and oil slinger. Good maintenance is key to longevity.

Thanks for the info just got it back from the machine shop 10 over on the bore and 10 under on the crank its in good hands now hope fully have it back to work buy next week
