Two piece fuel tank

Recommended Posts

sorekiwi

Finally got my Lawn Ranger fuel tank back together today (the lovely '63/'64 two-piece aluminum one).

I took it apart, beadblasted out 40 years worth of crap, removed 4 broken 8-32 bolts, put in half a dozen 8-32 helicoils, fitted a new gasket (no sealer), broke another bolt, fixed another thread and finally got it back together. Put a plug in the outlet and filled it with fuel.

8 hour later its all dry, not a trace of a leak.

I'm sure as soon as I paint it it'll start to leak. Maybe I should go ahead and put a bottle of fuel tank sealer through it first... :banghead:

Mike I also have a 63 two piece tank that I have not been able to get it to stop leaking. Let me know what you might come up with as far as the sealer goes, where you pick it up at, the name, price etc; Just Curious? Thanks Burly

I would definetly add sealer before you paint it, that's what I did several years ago and it hasn't leaked yet.

Mike, i would go ahead and either put the sealer you are talkin about in it  or if you have some other tanks that need cleaned/sealed  get the gas tank cream that alot of people use :omg: just remember its a little expensive and is only a 1 time use :banghead: thats why its better to have a bunch to repair :USA:

like that. Put back together filled it with gas no leaks. But if you run a white

paper towel along the edge I notice a little brown streak on towel and a

faint oder of gas on towel. No drips or anything like that though. :banghead:

Well I thought you guys would tell me to seal it....

I guess I should, it would really p1ss me off if it drips on the paint and discolors it. :banghead:

Now to work out which brew to use:

I used the one from Hirsch Auto on my 854 and 856 and have enough left to do one more. The 856 had a half dozen pin holes where it rusted through. I bought the three step kit and it hasn't leaked in at least five years.

We have a radiator shop that seals tanks and fairly cheap, but what ever you do do seal it, you would hate to mess up fresh paint :banghead:

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I've ordered a kit of Bill Hirsch sealer, and will post how it turns out. I'm going to do the aluminum LR tank, an RJ Tank (steel) and another tank similar to the RJ one.

Here's the product I ordered: http://www.hirschauto.com/prodinfo.asp?number=CRK%2D01

Cant wait to hear how it turns out, Ive used the eastwood sealer in a couple of truck gas tanks with good results...but they were both new, figure to nip the problems in the butt before they get started!

That's the kit I bought in 2003 (didn't have the putty in it then) and sealed my metal tank on the 856 that was leaking like a sieve. Used it to seal my two piece 854 and have some left for another if needed. You won't be disappointed. :banghead:

I've also used that kit.

I had a 47 Chevy that had so many pin holes in the tank that the local radiator shop wouldn't fix it. I sealed it in 1987 and used fiberglass resin and cloth on the outside to keep the metal (what was left of it) where it belongs, sold the car in 1999, bought it back in 2004 and it still had the same tank that I patched, still holding gas just fine.

I sold it again in 2006, but who knows, I may own it again someday, it always finds it's way home.
