Doctor Who watchers?

Recommended Posts

I think that the newest Doctor Who may have aired in the U.K. already.  We have to wait until 9:00pm Eastern to see it.  If you saw it what did ya think? (no spoilers)

Well, I thought it was a great episode.  I haven't been a Matt Smith fan, but in this episode I couldn't imagine anyone else doing it.

Agree, but I think he nailed the role... Shortly before he regenerated :)

New year, new doctor...

Fwiw. I think David tennant has been the best doc in recent times, my childhood favourite was Tom Baker

I’m old enough to remember the very first series with William Hartnell. The sets may have been cardboard, the TARDIS console built from junk but it was gripping stuff to a nine year old and even scary at times! My favorite Doctor from the early series would have to be Tom Baker but then over time it gradually lost its way for me and became passé so it was quite understandable when Doctor Who was finally dropped.

To my mind the genius behind its successful rebirth was in Russell Davies as producer. Christopher Ecclestone as the Doctor and his assistant Billie Piper as Rose were inspired choices making it a 100% successful return to our screens. David Tennant then made the role his own, initially with Billie Piper, and the writing team produced some of the best ever episodes IMHO. I didn’t find it surprising that in a recent pole David and Billie were voted best doctor and assistant ever!

It is hard to have a favorite episode from this period as there were so many very good ones but for me ‘The Girl in the Fireplace’ stands out above the rest. The series also developed a fantasy element with some inspired costumes for Rose including the shortest denim skirt thingie ever oh, and who can forget the maids outfit. The ever popular Billie Piper has of course made reappearances from time to time including most recently in the 50th anniversary episode.

It’s difficult to say exactly why but Matt Smith hasn’t really done it for me as the Doctor. It wasn’t just that David Tennant was a hard act to follow but everything seemed to change possibly in part because Russell Davies left as Producer. I dropped from avid watcher to occasional and my collection of DVD sets grew no further. The anniversary episode ‘The Day of the Doctor’ was sort of ok as was the Christmas Special, ‘The Time of the Doctor’ but I do think it’s been losing its way again. (Just my opinion)

Switched off the cable right after the Doctor found out who River Song was, havent seen the recent episodes. I grew up on Tom Baker as the Doctor. I have always loved the show and the cheesy villains from the 70s. When the new version of the show came out I was excited and apprehensive. I hoped it would bring back the wonder and awe of a great scifi show but I was afraid that it would just be some cheeky thrown together  scripts mimicking the old shows. I was greatly surprised with the way it turned out. Great story lines with a bigger story line hidden within. Great new baddies, the angels scare me the most (dont blink), the side kicks have been great (rose was wonderful but Donna kicked butt), the long story arcs have been pretty good and hae made me watch some episodes over just so I could catch something I missed the first time. I wasnt sure how I would like Matt Smith when he first appeared but after a few episodes and we got to see just how Gritty (for the Doctor) he could be, I really started to like him. Well I hope to catch up once the season start showing up on netflix and Hulu.

I have really fond memories of the Dr wWho series way back in the 70`s . I grew up watching with the actor John Pertwee as Dr who with his velvet jacket & Ruffled shirts  along with his Beautiful assistant Elisabeth Sladen who sadly died of Cancer in 2011

Elisabeth was the assistant of both John Pertwee & Tom Baker

I oten used to hide behind the scatter cusions on my mums sofa while watching the programe & chewing the corners of the cusions .

Like Andy, I watched the very first series with William Hartnell and then Patrick Troughton. Novelty wore off after that, got bored and became a TEENAGER :banana-rock::cool:  :auto-dirtbike:
