nylyon-(Admin) 7,878 #1 Posted December 20, 2013 I gave up on Windows completely in 2007. I spent WAY too much time fixing, downloading drivers, updating and eventually the occasional re-install of the OS. My first Mac was a 20" iMac. Since I bought it I think that it's hung once where the power button had to be pressed to free it up, other than that it just works! Kids now a days have a lot of homework which requires a computer, so late 2011, I bought a Macbook Pro laptop. Again I couldn't be happier (except when liquid spilled and fried the mother board). The computer is fast and super reliable. This year for Christmas I got my son and me a Mac Mini. This will be hooked up to the television and server as a 3rd computer as well as a media center, central backup and Minecraft server. The Mac Mini is going to be perfect since it's low power consumption and virtually silent when running. Can't wait to unwrap this and put it to use! Oh, and for you Windows guys, it'll be fitted with VMWare Fusion and multiple versions Windows (still have to get a windows 7 key though) If you're on the fence about a computer, consider a Mac, yes they're more expensive but the thing just works!
AMC RULES 37,195 #2 Posted December 20, 2013 Thanks for the tip Karl... might be the time to give the Mac's a look too. While you were looking, did you see any good deals on 'em out there?
nylyon-(Admin) 7,878 #3 Posted December 20, 2013 There's never deals on these things. I get a few bucks off because of my employment, but they're still expensive.
AMC RULES 37,195 #4 Posted December 20, 2013 Humm...at the point of sale, did you just mention your employer to get the discount Karl?
nylyon-(Admin) 7,878 #5 Posted December 20, 2013 No, for my employee discount, I have a special link in the Apple Store which discounts all the prices. I bought it on-line using the discount, and chose the option to pick-up in the store. In addition to my discount, I got to pay CT sales tax instead of NY so saved even more (of course I will declare that on my NY tax return)
AMC RULES 37,195 #6 Posted December 20, 2013 OK Karl, we're looking now.
meadowfield 2,733 #7 Posted December 20, 2013 With you on the mac thing Karl, though for the server I'm running a hp proliant win 7 with 8.5TB of storage. Might have done the mini, but it was getting big storage that was the issue.... Though it runs iTunes and fingerprint allowing it to be the main media server for the Mac, iPads, Apple TV and of course iPhones!
nylyon-(Admin) 7,878 #8 Posted December 20, 2013 I have some external drives for add'l storage.

leeave96 490 #10 Posted December 21, 2013 Now see, I'm showing my age here, but when I first saw "Mac" I was picturing a McCulloch 10-10 chainsaw - whole different kind of Mac... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

How's the Mac Mini working out? Thinking about buying one to use as a desktop/base station to tie all the iPhones, iPad and iPods together. I like the idea of being able to use/reuse the keyboard, monitor, etc., from the old/crashed windows PC. Also might give Apple TV a try too. Thanks, Bill
nylyon-(Admin) 7,878 #12 Posted March 29, 2014 I have the Mac Mini hooked unto the television and am using it a a full server and backup computer. Currently it has all our movies and music on it, it's backing up all the other computers in the house, serving VPN when we're not home, sync'ing the iPad's and running a full-time Minecraft server. I am thinking of buying an inexpensive monitor for it so it can be used more as a computer, but for now my oldest loves to play Minecraft on a 48" screen! We do have an Apple TV hooked up as well, which pulls the movie and music collection from the Mac Mini. So far it's working exactly as planned.
