It starts but after 10ish seconds if stops. I don't see leaks, fuel filter has gas and tank is full. Air cleaner looks ok.Thoughts? I had been riding my son around for maybe 30 mins.

Help

It could be the vent in the gas cap, had that ptoblem on my 312-8, took the cap off, started it up and ran fine until about 5 min after putting the cap back on; got a new cap and no more problem.

Good place to start. My Dad had this problem with a new riding mower.

I had a similar experience this summer with a 12 hp Kohler similar to yours. Would run for 1 or more hours and then shorter and shorter intervals until it wouldn't run at all. Turned out to be the condenser. It was a cheap fix.

Check the gas cap, then the spark.

Instead of changing parts, find out what you are loosing.  Gas or spark.

In 10 sec i doubt the fuel cap.  More along the lines of a bad condensor, plug, coil, etc.

I am going to check this out Thursday. Is the condenser the same as the coil?

I am planning on working on that 416 too. The 312 is priority. Thanks

Would a bad condenser make it start and run for a couple minutes (1-3 minutes) then shut off?

The coil and condenser are different parts.

A condenser could, are you losing spark or fuel?
