KC9KAS 4,744 #1 Posted December 15, 2013 On the 27th of November I threw a wooden skid onto an electric transfer and it bounced back into my right shin. There isn't any "meat" on a shin, and it hurt at 1st, but soon quit hurting. About 1/2 hour later, I pulled my pant leg up to see a 5" long scrape, brusing and swelling. Well, I'm a tough guy and I hit, cut, or do something almost everyday that needs a bandaid, so I wasn't too concerned. Fast forward two weeks and it is looking worse and now, IT HURTS, and I limping. I went to after-hours care and got a tetnus shot, an oral antibotic, as well as a topical antibotic. This injury should never have gotten to this point, but I didn't take proper care of it initally.....And, diabetes certianlly doesn't help the matter. SO, people, no matter how minor the cut, scratch or bruise is, treat it properly so you don't have more problems later! Yes, I have photos, but they are gross looking and I didn't want to scare the women & children!

rmaynard 16,376 #3 Posted December 15, 2013 Yes, we all have a learning experience that we can share. But it seems that the older you get, the harder it is to heal. And when you are on the slippery side of the slope, you don't want to grease that slide any more than it already is. I know what you say about always doing something that needs a band-aide. Having been in the home improvement trade, I buy them by the gross. On one occasion, I went to my cardiologist for a regular checkup and I had a band-aide on every finger. The doctor looked at me and said "business must be good". Anyway, I hope you heal quickly. And please, no picture needed on this one.
groundhog47 347 #4 Posted December 15, 2013 KC9..., also gota remember about the possibility of a clot getting into the bigger return line, and oh #@&%. A fellow down here walked too close to trailer hitch, hit his shin, later had difficulty breathing, went into ER, and died. The clot got on the move, made it through heart into lungs...pulmonary embolism. I warn wife about that every time we are near a rear bumper. You take care, guy!
Marv 984 #5 Posted December 16, 2013 That is why shin guards are used by baseball catchers. I heard of a case where someone died after being hit on the shin by a ball. Can't be too careful, especially those of us at an advanced age. Oh to be young and invincible. Marvin

JC 1965 1,532 #7 Posted December 16, 2013 Wow !! hope your feeling better soon and your shin heals quickly. I can relate to your situation. I am a diabetic and a couple years ago I was taking a shower and dropped a bottle of shampoo on one of my large toes.It stung a little at first but I didn't think much about it. About a week later I noticed my toe was very red so I called the doctor and explained the situation. The nurse told me the doctor wanted to see me immediately so I went to the office. He looked at my toe and called a Foot doctor and sent me there. The foot doctor removed my toe nail and did surgery on my toe. I was on antibiotics for weeks and he said if I had waited much longer i might have lost my foot. I just had no idea it was that serious when it happened. Guess you never know.
