Wood stove, finally!

I've been doing nothing for the past 2 months except working on other people's houses, and was finally able to get roof jacks on my roof and measure for my chimney liner today. Hopefully next weekend ill be burning wood in my new stove. Then I'll be getting the Horse in working order and putting the plow on. After that, I don't care if it snows 6' every week. : ) It's nice to have side work, but I'm ready to work on my stuff.

Anyone else burning wood?

You ain't kidding. Working 7 days a week gets old real quick. First season I can remember that I missed the pheasant opener.

We've been burning wood for the last 2 months off and on this season!  A toasty 75 degrees in the house this afternoon.  Gotta love the wood stove!

We've been heating our house with wood and coal for the past 5 or 6 years now. When natural gas threatened to go sky high, that put me over the edge and I put the stove in. It's much warmer now than when we were using the gas furnace, and my gas bill is only about 50 bucks a month now! I gather all the free wood I can get - year  'round, and we buy two tons of coal (anthracite) every other year. You'll love it. You gotta work for it though - that's the only thing - there's no free lunch.

We've saved a lot on gas bills over the years. The stove has paid for itself by now.

We burn wood here along with some coal. The stove also has a back boiler that heats the water and does the central eating. The living room door is never closed. I've made a stove out of an old gas bottle. That will be installed in the workshop one day.

Oh yeah - forgot about the barn - I put an old military tent stove out there. Works great for that space and it was dirt cheap off fleabay.

I'm burning wood in the garage! I really like the old wood stove. Plus, if I'm painting something for my tractor I figured out I can stack two cinder blocks on the stove with the holes facing up, and let my paint cure a while that way.

I heat my house with wood. I grew up with wood heat and have heated every house I've owned with wood. I've been in this house for 22 years now.

I grew up with a wood stove in the house and when I bought my house 20 yrs ago I wanted one for it. Well, it took 20 yrs and last winter I finally got one and my house is now warm. The oil bill was getting to be 2600.00 a yr.(and the house was never really warm) and I don't really see the prices going down much. I use my Wheel Horse quite a bit hauling the wood to the house.

NIce pic, Ken! Not surprised we have quite a few wood burners here. Like mentioned above, I am just not paying the huge oil bill anymore, and living in a cold house. My dad always burned coal and wood, and I have been wanting to get a wood stove in this house for years. Finally got around to buying a new stove and getting everything planned out to do the install. Next step is to get rid of this oil burner and go back to coal. It sure is nice to have a warm house when the power goes out in a storm, too.

I put an insert in our fireplace 8 years ago, and never looked back. I put returns in the ceiling above it, and ran it to the central air unit. I turn on the fan when the stove gets up to temp, and heat the whole house with it. We use natural gas for heat, hot water, cooking, and laundry. On the budget plan, we pay $70 a month. We keep the furnace on, but held 24/7 @ 64deg. The stove does the rest, most of the time into the 70's. I haven't paid for any wood as of yet. You must be "jonny on the spot' around here to accomplish this. Like it was said, no free lunch though.

i want to put a wood stove in so bad. this will be our second winter in this enormous house that's heated by oil, and poorly at that.

 

we have a fire place but if i insert it the room will be unusable and the air won't circulate. i'm hoping to put a nice potbelly in the entry once we have the $$. the entry is the only place i can see the heat actually being usefull.

I just got permission from the mine company to take all the standing dead timber and fallen trees I want. 7,000 acres of woods that butts up to my back yard. The Horse will get a good work out this winter!

Burning wood you say? I have a lot.

 

I'm jealous I wish I had a wood stove. We would have to add a new chimney as our current one only has one flume which is occupied by the furnace and water heater.

I installed my Alaska two door stove in 1966 as a back up for my oil burner, and I have been burning wood ever since.

The Tecky powered C-120 never fails to blow a path to the wood pile and haul in the fuel.

Then I sit back and relive my days afield.

My house has a goofy layout, it was once a summer cottage in a lake community that has been added onto a few times so it can be a challenge to get all the rooms nice and warm. The wood stove is in the living room with one of my sons rooms on the other side of the living room wall. He was complaining a few days ago that it was a little cold in his room at night. So, last night I cut a few vents in up high and put a small air circulation fan in between the vents and there ya have it, a nice toasty 75 degrees in his room now and Cole is super happy. It is supposed to be down to around 17 degrees tonight, I'm gonna pack that stove up and crank er up! We all really enjoy the wood stove, even the wife helps out with it. I think she likes the thought of not having to pay the oil bills and she knows I really enjoy it and all the chores that go along with it. Emma our Beagle enjoys it the most though, she'll plop down right on the floor and lay there for hours!

A pellet stove in the house and another in the shed. In the house I put a box fan on the floor at the far end of the hallway on low, blowing towards the living room where the stove is, and that warms that end of the house well.
