MalMac 1,333 #1 Posted November 13, 2013 Alright coming up with this Digitally Challenged section, you must have had me in mind. Alright I am running Vista as my operating System I know it's outdated and has some problems. What I have been running into for the last couple of months is a software conflict that is causing a lot of headaches. I am not sure it's Vista but most likely. If I put a different updated OS on will it automatically eliminate Vista or will it hang around a still cause problems. Do I put the latest greatest on or a tried and true system if still available? I do know one thing for sure. There are a lot of programs out there that do not like Vista and Vista does not like them.
nylyon-(Admin) 8,116 #2 Posted November 14, 2013 It depends on what the conflict is, what is happening specifically that leads you to believe you have a software conflict?
Trouty56 567 #3 Posted November 14, 2013 Before you consider updating to a more recent Windows OS better be sure the hardware can handle it. for example... http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20 Most Windows OS problems arise from it's hoarding nature. When the OS is freshly installed it is like a new house and everything has it's place.....as time goes on more and more things get placed here and there....sometimes things that are common are placed in a couple different places (fragmented) so when a program calls for it the information takes a long time to get together and then a small piece just might be missing or lost (corrupted). Karl brought up backups....very important......cause when you clean the house of the hoarding you will need your information safe....
MalMac 1,333 #4 Posted November 14, 2013 I am not sure how to tell what the conflict is. I know what the outcome of the conflict is and that's freeze up's and unresponsiveness. Seems like it ever since I updated to a newer version of my anti virus things have been going down hill. Starting to think my OS just does not like my anti virus. I have had to disable or delete a lot of add on programs and it seems to help some. I have read where Vista OS causes problems with a lot of programs. Not being computer literate I have to go with what I read. Maybe dumping the anti virus and trying something else is the answer, but that starts getting expensive see how I have a lot of money wrapped up in the anti virus program. nylyon-(Admin) 8,116 #5 Posted November 14, 2013 Anti virus programs really do put a lot of strain on computers, especially older single core processors. The thing to remember is that while these newer programs will work on older computers, it doesn't mean you should run them on older machines. You're right switching programs can be costly, but you can also try something like AVG which is free to see if your virus program is suspect. I do not recommend running without a virus program for internet connected machines.
MalMac 1,333 #6 Posted November 14, 2013 I had used AVG before and it did not cause any problems but it was letting some virus through that's why I switched. Question, if I disable my antivirus and load AVG back on will the problems the antivirus is causing now stop even though the program is still on the computer but disabled? nylyon-(Admin) 8,116 #7 Posted November 14, 2013 They might, it's a good test to do.
