Swap a K241S with a K241AS?

Recommended Posts

The K241s in my '86 310-8 is starting to smoke quite a bit and needs to be rebuilt. However I have what I believe to be a K241AS from a c-101 with the isolation type motor mount oil pan. Is there an easy way to swap the oil pans between the 2 engines (I don't have the isolation motor mount brackets). Ideally I'd like to put the K241AS in the 310 while the original motor is at the machine shop being rebuilt so I'm not left without a tractor to power my snow blower in the event of a snowstorm!

The short answer is NO. The S engine oil pan cannot be placed on the AS engine block and vise-versa.

If I could find the "shaker" style mounting plate for the K241AS engine would it bolt up?

You can remove the belt guard and bolt the entire isolation mount system in place of your solid mount.  Then bolt the engine to the isolation mount.  The belt guard is different, and some hole are not in place on certqain frames.

If you do not have a spare isolation mount, you cannot just swap pans.  The base of the block is different.

If you do find a cradle, be sure to install all the necessary grounds. Since the cradle is isolated from the frame,a ground must be established between the block and the cradle (mounting bolts), cradle to frame (wire), battery to frame (wire).

Just restored a C-101 ( K241AS )  this year , I mounted  everything to the cradle "  BEFORE "  I mounted it on the tractor - the engine to cradle mounting bolts are too long and right over the frame when on the tractor -  also the isolation mounts/cradle  don't mount directly to the frame - there are two angled mounting ( one at each end ) blocks bolted to the frame the mounts sit on and bolt to.

I had to loosen the blocks a little to get all my bolts started .

If you need a picture or two let me know,

Went out to the barn tonight to look at the engine, it appears that I have the mounting plate but not the cast blocks (#22 & 25) and the rubber mounts. Does anyone have the a measurement from the top of the frame to the bottom of the engine mounting plate so I can see if I can fab up a mounting block?

5/8 " from the top of the frame to the bottom of the cradle - check around here - you may find someone who has a set - save a lot of work - take note though the C-111 on the parts list is different than the other models - what and why I have no idea

My measurement is off my C-101 .

Thanks for the measurement, I'm hoping other than making / finding a couple brackets that this is an easy swap!

I went with a couple 3/8 inch by 1 1/2 inch flat steel....cut 4 pieces to the width of the frame.....bolted 2 to the bottom of the oil pan with a 1/8 washer between....then I lined up the pto hoop and positioned the other 2 pieces where existing bolt holes were.and clamped them tight.....  sprayed paint under the frame where the holes needed drilled....  Then bolted it all together......positioned things with the pto hoop again and welded the cut pieces in place.....

Total height off the frame was 7/8 inch......5/8 from the frame to the bottom of the plate and 1/4 inch plate.....Rube Goldberg but ....

Honestly it isn't in the tractor yet but I'm pretty sure it will bolt right on when the time comes....

I had a similar problem with a C160 where the block was different and I had to raise the engine 3/4" and redrill the frame to mount it. I didn't have the original block, as it was blown up when I got it and was a 14 hp instead of the 16 that belonged on it. I found a 16 hp from a wheel horse and bought it not knowing that the base was different but I made the spacers and redrilled the frame and bolted it down. Has been on since half way through the summer and is fine.

That's not bad. Looks like the mount for a 181 on the 70s tractors
