I pulled the vandoes anyone know of an easier way to pull the starter out of a Briggs vanguard 18. I have mine on the bench and I can't seem to get to the mounting bolts. It looks like you have to pull the flywheel to get to the starter bolts

What does "pulled the vandoes" mean?

On the older L-head twins you can loosen the bolts and leave the one in the hole, and remove the starter.  On the vanguards, I beleive you will indeed need to remove the flywheel.  Use the proper method to pull it, not a hammer!.
