K-91 replacement recoil spring - anyone got a good cross ref number?

Recommended Posts

CasualObserver

I tore into a FM recoil on a K91 this morning, sort of expected to find a broke spot in the spring and that maybe I could just re-bend it and use it anyway.  Not so much.

So... off to the forum I go, searching for topics that might have the info I need... since I know K-91 recoils have been discussed here quite a bit.  I find plenty of topics where people are discussing the Fairbanks Morse recoil, and even a few also talking about broken springs.... but what I can't find in any of them is a good replacement spring number to use since the OEM part is discontinued.  Surely there must be another spring that is an acceptable swap?  You know... that doesn't involve spending $40-70 for one on ebay?

Anyone?

By the way... reusing the old one is definitely out of the question. I've never seen one in this many pieces!

Interesting.  Complete metal fatigue breakdown.  After that it turns to dust.

That looks a lot like the B&S or Tecumseh spring, but I may be way out to Tokyo on just looks.

Couple Techy parts will likely fix that ol' Kohler shoulder you got too Mike.

See if your Dr. can hook you up.   :confusion-shrug:   :confusion-shrug:

I should have a tatoo of a recoil housing and pull rope on my shoulder.  :)

Would you mind showing me the inside... you know, since you have your hand directly on it?  Does it have the correct bends on the ends or do they have to be made?  If I'm going to order a spring, I want one that's pop in and go (well... more like pop in, spring out, cuss, pinch finger, pop spring, cuss again...etc, etc...and eventually get in.... then start over because it needs two more coils to have enough spring to pull the whole rope back in... ;) )  If I'm going to have to heat and make my own bends anyway, I can just tear open a junk one from anything.

They're cheap enough to take a chance and get you one of these Techy springs I've shown you Jason...you won't be disappointed.   :teasing-poke:

All it will take is a slight pinch to the steel circle end, which will allow it to fit right into the retaining channel on the back of your FM housing. I'll even provide you with the ebay link, pretty sure you'll be able to make short work of the retrofit.

Nothing's cheap enough to waste money on... especially if I'm going to have to buy Tecumseh parts! :hide:

Thanks for the part number!
