Revoke the Tax-Exempt Status of the National Football League

I received a petition today from change.org to revoke the tax-exempt status of the NFL.  I thought it was a joke at first that the NFL is considered a non-profit organization yet it's a $9 billion a year industry.  I can't think of any good reason why they shouldn't pay federal corporate taxes like other businesses do.  There's a link below if you wish to sign the petition to revoke their tax-exempt status.  So far over 141,000 people have signed.

I would venture to bet that the NFL does a fair amount of donating to various campaigns to keep it off the tax radar (until now).  6000 more people have signed it just since 10:30 last night.  Their "non-profit" tax status will be gone within a year.

I wouldn't bet on that.  This is not new news.  It's just been "bumped" to the top again lately.

 

If policy were really driven by public opinion many things would be different in our lives.

Legislation was introduced on Friday to try to address this.  Many changes tend to get in the news repeatedly over time to build awareness.  It may not be new news to you but not everyone is aware of it (especially those who don't follow football).   Politicians are constantly polling and checking the latest surveys to try to figure out what the public is thinking.  The people of Oregon recalled two senators after they tried to change the gun laws.  I doubt there will many politicians trying that again without first gauging the public opinion in their area.  The internet has made it simple for the public opinion to coalesce.
