c-160 questions

just got my first wh yesterday and couldnt be more thrilled, but i have a zillion questions. i want to change the oil but dont know how much or what type. i want to know everything about this tractor. how to care for hydraulics, which implements will work on it. where to get parts, etc. i would really love to see another one amd compare notes. i guess what i need is an owners manual and a mentor.

To get the correct manual for the C-160, you'll need to know the model number.  The model number is on a metal tag riveted to the hoodstand....just about where your left knee would be if sitting on the tractor.  You should see something like 1-0480 or 71-16KS01 if later model year.  

IMHO the C-160 is the best they ever made.  Plenty of power and the hydraulic lift is a huge bonus.  I have a 48" dozer blade and it will take 36, 42, or 48" mower decks, 36" rototiller, 42" snow blower, sickle bar, and other attachments.  Mine is the 1973 16hp Auto ('no-name' year) and in 1974 it got the C-160 designation.  I bought it as a yearling in 1975 and have used it since without any major issues, and few minor issues.  

I think you can still buy manuals for $2 bux or so from Toro.com but not sure on that.  Others will chime in to set you in the right direction for manuals

I do need to caution you on one item....  When you pull up the PARKING LEVER make certain that the tractor is DEAD STOP.  DO NOT EVER pull up that lever while moving....not even in a PANIC STOP.  This is a PARKING BRAKE and it works by jamming a gear in the transmission.  If you do the PANIC STOP thing, little bits of steel get chipped off of the trans gears and those chips work thru the hudraulic system.  As they work their way thru, some critical brass parts of the hydraulic system get damaged which leads to premature failure.  End of lecture.

great information. thanks. just spent about 5 hours mowing knee high grass and it really did well. im worn out but it coukd keep on going.

the place where i have to mow are,in some places, pretty rough. what can you tell me about replacement mowing blades. i believe i have the small mowing deck. think it is a 36" deck.
