Jersey guys in the know....

Question to my Jersey friends in the know. I'm going to NJ this weekend and want to take my pickup on the parkway. The truck is commercially registered in NY (had to because of the size) for 9,000 lbs. I see conflicting information, but think that it's okay if it's under 10,000 lbs. I need to know if it's LEGAL to drive it, not that it's not enforced (really don't

want a ticket).

According to: http://www.state.nj.us/turnpike/documents/regulationsunofficialversionforWebsite.pdf

"Car" means a passenger motor vehicle, including, but not limited to, station wagons, hearses, funeral flower and funeral service vehicles for which issuance of passenger car plates is authorized, taxicabs, motorcycles, two-axle four-tire campers, panel vans, pickup trucks and similar vehicles having a gross weight not exceeding 10,000 pounds.

1. All vehicles, except cars, campers, omnibuses, attached noncommercial trailers or semitrailers are prohibited from the Parkway north of Interchange 105;

But other sources seem to indicate differently. Just looking for the facts on this.

Karl I don't know if I was legal, but I've never been stopped on the Palisades Parkway(445) or the Garden Way(444) even in NY on the parkways. We have about the same truck other than I have a cap on mine

So....  I wasn't expecting a fast reply, but the NJ Turnpike authority replied to my question which was:

I am a resident of New York and am confused about the laws governing Commercial / pickup truck access on the Garden State Parkway north of exit 105.  I have a pickup truck which must be registered Commercial in NY due to it's weight.  It is registered at 9,000 lbs and has no visible commercial markings.  We use it to tow our camper.  I am planning on visiting friends in Ship Bottom, and would like to take the Parkway.  So my question is:

Can my NY registered Commercial Pickup truck (Ford F250) registered at 9,000 lbs travel on the GSP north of exit 105?  I will NOT have a trailer, it will just be the pickup truck.

I am confused because some information I read indicates that under 10,000 lbs, it's considered a "car" and others mention 7,000.  I want to be 100% certain that I am in compliance with NJ Law.

They replied with the following:

Yes you are allowed to use the entire Parkway.

So looks like it's legal!

I'd print a copy of the response that you got from the turnpike authority, and keep it in the truck for when you get pulled over. :law-policeblue:

Being a Jersey resident and driving on Parkway just about every day I can tell you that it is perfectly ok for you to drive that truck on Parkway. Unlike NY commercial vehicles are allowed on it at all times. The only restriction is for large tractor trailers on the North part of Parkway due to height restrictions. That restriction is only in effect up to about the shore areas.
