CENTRAL AIR OUT

Recommended Posts

illinilefttackle

Hi guys- good thing its cool outdoors- my central air is on the fritz again. I replaced the "run/start" capacitor about 4 years ago-but now I am getting different symptoms than last time-now- I get fan operation both inside with the air handler-and outside on the condensing unit-BUT- no compressor start up/no cold air. Any HVAC experts out there? Am I right to assume that because I have fan operation outside that the contactor is good? I think I have a meter to check capacitors-but I am not sure. Because its a Dual unit-do you think I should just assume its out and try another? Please turn on your crystal ball/ Thanks-Al

Note: Its old enough it could be the compressor too.

Have the coils been cleaned? Dirty coils can cause high head pressure. running that way for an extended period of time will overload the compressor causing failure. Coils need to be cleaned from the inside out. some models the cols are "layered" and need to be disassembled to be cleaned properly. You can try another cap but I'm betting on a compressor.   If you get lucky a contractor may still be able to get an R-22 compressor but R-22 is being phased out and it's $$$. The best  way to repair is an entire new outdoor unit using 410-a and a new evaporator.
