My brand new 48" rotary mower

Recommended Posts

papaglide

I was at my local WH/Toro/Kubota dealer last Thursday when I asked the parts counter fella if it was still possible to get a new 48" deck. I had been looking a used one for a while and couldn't find one. He checked a Toro catalog and saw that one was still offered. He called the Latham, NY distribution center and found out they had one left! He told me the price. After I picked myself up off of the floor and cleaned up the mess in my drawers, I gave him the OK to order it! I got the call on Tuesday that it was at the dealer. I went to pick it up, brought it home and wanted to share the pic that I took. So here it is, Model 78361, 48" Mower.

Very nice. I've been on the lookout for spare decks too. I've maxed out on tractors, now need to stock up on wear items and decks/spindles are one of those things.

Good luck,

Bill

I'm curious as to the cost as well. That deck is a thing of beauty. I know you'll take great care of it! I know where there might be some NOS decks still. I can't remember if they were 42's or 48's though. I want a 48.

Don't laugh at me! But I figure that it will be the last deck that I will ever need. $1,399.00 + tax.

Someone else on here just bought one recently. $1400. Pretty soon Toro will be out of these and we'll have to rely on used ones and the prices will go through the roof.

Guess I should take good care of mine.

It’s a lot of money, but that deck is beautiful! I’d probably have to hang it on my garage wall and stare at it for the first year.

the price of the new decks is why many people get rid of the horse and buy a new tractor, which is good for us buying them

Wow, nice find.  I'm sure it hurt to pay that much.  Heck, for that price, I'd be too scared to use it.  I don't think I could actually bring myself to actually mow with it.

Can you post a couple of pics of the underside.  Jeez, this sounds soooo . . .tractor pornographic.

I've seen almost new (used decks) for sale at $1200.00.  It's a lot but where are you going to find one like that otherwise.

Great find Papaglide

Thanks for all of the support. Heck yeah, the price freaked me out. My family is by no means wealthy, and I didn't pay cash, but I thought about it overnight and I figured that it can go on most any tractor that I want and it will last a hell of a long time. To me it seemed like a very good investment, that deck might outlast some of the tractors that I have! BTW, it came with a front tach-a-matic and a belt.

That seems to be about the going price for a new WH deck.  I wanted to buy a new 48" deck for my JD 425, and the dealer wanted almost $1K for a BARE deck (no gear box, pulleys, spindles or belts)!   I also heard that a complete new 48" deck was almost $1900!  I just couldn't swallow that and finally found a decent used 48" deck in NY, after searching for almost a year.  I enjoy buying WH parts, because generally they are still almost half of what JD wants for a similar part (although still not cheap).

Thanks.  However I spruced up the used 48" deck and it is mowing great.  I bought a new belt, guards, paint and the deck now mows and looks like new.  It is the best mowing deck I've had on the JD 425 to-date.  It originally came with a 60" deck that scalped my yard too much.

This is why IMHO finding spare decks now vs. later is a great idea. They are only going to get more expensive down the road.

My opinion on this is, with proper care and maintenance this deck should last 30 plus yrs. so the $1400 is a good investment!!

We all know where the grass likes to hang up and what it does to the spindle housing so with a bit of maintenance and cleaning there is no reason why you could not go 30 years.  I oil mine twice a year.  My 97 is still like new and half way to 30 years.

I have an 88 tractor and deck.  I only acquired it 2-3 years back and have had the deck repaired, welded in new metal in two places but now it's good to go again for a few more years.

There will be more tractors than decks in a few years so it would not hurt to have stock.

This is probably a stupid way to live my life, but I'm kind of looking forward, one of these days, when my kids get their own home, fixing them up with one of these old iron tractors - and some other old iron stuff too.  If it's hard to get a decent spare deck today, what's it going to be like 10 or 20 years from now.  So, I'm stocking up for myself, with some eye towards the future.

That's just being a parent and wanting the best for your children whether its Wheel Horse or and education or a job or a home.  Nothing stupid about that my friend.  Hopefully they will appreciate what you have done, are doing and will do.  Not all do.

i would clean that new deck alot,in my opinion the build up of grass underneath it is the worst thing, and maybe some kind of paint or whatever on thr bottom of the spindles, and she would last forever
