Tecumseh recoil spring install Problem

While recently working on one of my older Lawn Rangers, I disasembled an early 60's tecumseh HH60 aluminum recoil for a cleaning . All looked good afterwards until it was time to put it back together.  My Problem is I can't get the spring reinstalled. spent two hours trying with no luck.

 

Is there a trick to reloading these recoils springs? or maybe some tool for the job?   Anybody done this before?  Or is this something I should have left well alone?

The way i do it, is hook the spring in the case and wind the spring to sit in the case. With the rope all hooked up, I then hook the spring to the rope pulley. I then get the pulley to sit inside the case where it belongs.. There should be a notch in the pulley. Pull enough rope through and set the rope in the notch and start wrapping the pulley to get the correct tension on the spring for recoil. I can do it quicker than it took to type this lol. Sounds complicated but its not really.
