Lever to engage deck disengaging while cutting grass

Recommended Posts

Guys,

You help a few weeks back with my carb issue and the engine is running really smooth now.. thanks

Now while cutting the grass the lever that you push forward to engage the blades is jumping back and disengaging the blades.  This is happening in the thicker grass, which is straining the motor a bit.  I would also say its happening when the shoot to the bags is clogged or getting clogged.

What should I be looking for that is allowing the blades to disengage?

Thanks

Chris

Forgot to mention this is a 312 1989 Wheel horse with a 37in deck (dual blade).

That was happening to me on my 1848 Workhorse. I would adjust the bell a little tighter to the clutch and that would help for awhile , but it kept disengaging . After looking over everything i took the bell off and the clutch material was completely gone and the bell had cut into the metal clutch disc.

Replaced the pto clutch and bell , adjusted the engagement rod and all is good !!!

Not sure if that is your problem , but might be worth a look. If the pto clutch is good , maybe you just need to adjust the rod ??

Adjust the rod, Download the manual from the files area for instructions on how to properly adjust it.  Or at least just give it a turn or two and try it.

also check the spring at the lever and make sure it is not broken.

It could be the C-clip on the out side bearing of the PTO has come loose. Could also be that the bearing in the PTO is worn out. I have had both to happen.

Mine did this for a while, and it drove me nuts.

Finally figured out that the engine mount plate was not tight on the frame.

It was twisting just enough to disengage when I  hit a bump.

Check the mounting bolts from engine to plate, and plate to frame.
