Jbo13 0 #1 Posted May 6, 2013 I've got a 416-8 with an onan. Starter was dragging So with help from here I took solenoid Apart and cleaned and hooked back up. Now When I hook the positive battery cable up The solenoid try's to engage. What have I Done wrong???
dsholler 54 #2 Posted May 6, 2013 There are three poles (or maybe 4) on the solenoid.. on mine there are the two main ones (one from the positive terminal of the battery, and one that goes to the positive terminal of the starter). Then there is the tab that comes from the ignition. When the activation tab is energized, it is supposed to cause the doodad inside the solenoid to jump and make contact with the two poles. My guess is that you may have some current on that one. (hooked up to the wrong thing on the ignition switch?) Either that, or your repair to the solenoid made something weird. it is magnetic,is it not? I have some weird reverse polarity theories that are probably all nonsense, but would be amusing to check out.
Jbo13 0 #3 Posted May 6, 2013 Not sure about the magnetic part I would Have to check. I have the blue wire the plugs on the bottom The black ground to the block and the Battery cable to the post on the solenoid I'm curious about the cloth like wire that comes From the starter to the other post on the solenoid Ill check again but something definatley got Changed when taken apart. Ill double Check and see if its something I did which I'm Sure it is. ThanksR
dsholler 54 #4 Posted May 7, 2013 Check this out. This is a site from a member here (SOI) which has fabulous stuff about electrical systems.. . http://saveoldiron.47.forumer.com/4-pole-starter-relay-troubleshooting-t2183711.html
Save Old Iron 1,563 #5 Posted May 7, 2013 Good info so far. To make a quick check of the starter relay, disconnect the black ground wire from the starter relay - this should prevent the starter relay from engaging ELECTRICALLY. If the starter continues to attempt to start the engine with the starter relay ground disabled, either #1 you have a starter RELAY mechanically jammed in the on position or #2 incorrect wiring to the starter MOTOR this older post may help if #2 turns out to be an issue.
