squonk 43,689 #1 Posted April 21, 2013 I'm selling a 414-8 on CL. The amount of spam and scam I'm receiving is nuts. They come overnight and with names like, Holburt Klug, Olinick Quann, Schafer Rushack ect. All with hotmail addresses and all asking the same exact question. They even asked once if I slept good the night before. It would be entertaining if it wasn't a PITA. I tried typing out my phone no. with words ,putting NO SPAM OR SCAM in the ad. Nothing works. AMC RULES 37,195 #2 Posted April 21, 2013 What's the burning question they all want to know Mike?
squonk 43,689 #3 Posted April 21, 2013 They ask and I'm quoting this exactly word for word. " Wheel Horse tractor 414-8 for sale?" That's it. I don't respond because I know it's spam. Then I get , "I've tried e-mailing with no response, Contact me at this e-mail address ASAP" All hot mail addresses.
Sparky-(Admin) 23,102 #4 Posted April 21, 2013 If you follow thru and contact them they claim to have a bank check or money order made out for you but its for an amount greater than the asking price of the item your selling. Lets say your machine is priced at $1000.....they claim their associate has the funds and will send them to you but its for an amount greater than $1000, maybe $1900. They ask you to keep an extra $100 for your troubles and to send them back the difference which would be $800. The money order or bank check or whatever you receive will not clear but they are hoping to get your $800 before you figure it out and of course being the honest type that most of us are the $800 will be good. Dirty bastards! Mike.............
squonk 43,689 #5 Posted April 21, 2013 What makes me laugh are the dumb names they come up with. The next thing you know some dummy using the name squonk will e-mail me! Ohh-wait.......

GlenPettit 1,717 #7 Posted April 21, 2013 Why is is Called Spam? There is some debate about the source of the term, but the generally accepted version is that it comes from the Monty Python song, "Spam spam spam spam, spam spam spam spam, lovely spam, wonderful spam". Like the song, spam is an endless repetition of worthless text. Another school of thought maintains that it comes from the computer group lab at the University of Southern California who gave it the name because it has many of the same characteristics as the lunch meat Spam: Nobody wants it or ever asks for it. No one ever eats it; it is the first item to be pushed to the side when eating the entree. Sometimes it is actually tasty, like 1% of junk mail that is really useful to some people.

groundhog47 347 #9 Posted April 21, 2013 Good to know fellow members, new to usin' CL and my son warned me about some of that. I've not gotten a single respose to ads though. Sounds like someone is 'cause they are to jealous or ignorant about honest endeavors. My son told me if an ad has no phone no. it may be bogus and I've seen the phone number like Mike says. Maybe one of these bogus bunglers would like havin' his drive shaft yanked with a WH towed chain. All cowards hide, Mike give em @#*&, post there email in your CL and let them get some spam! puddlejumper 67 #11 Posted April 22, 2013 My oldest boy, was selling a motorcylcle a year or so back, and he had a guy that kept aggravating him. Me and the wife finally got involved and made sure nothing financial could be traced back to us and played the game a little. We took one of his money orders with the understanding that the bike would not leave here until evrything cleared the bank. When it got here it was obvious everything was out of whack it had a business logo on it and we contacted the business,The man was in a serious uproar, somehow they had got into his small business account and was wreaking havoc with his business account. We gave the info to the law at his request and he contacted us a few times to thank us for our help but said under the cloak of the internet they never really found a way to track down the culprits. He basically had to completely shut down that account and start fresh. Thjey got him for a little but he caught it fast enough that it was under control before to much damage was done.

We have SPAM all the time. Tastes good with fried potatoes and eggs. We even have a SPAM museum . I think those computer geeks stole the name because they were jealous of our ground up unknown pig parts that are soaked in salt to make them last 1000 years. Here in Mn., we eat everything but the squeal on a pig. I guess I can see why they are jealous

sscotsman 186 #19 Posted April 26, 2013 I sold a few things on craigslist.. handy tip: make a new email address *just* for your craigslist ads! open a free email account on yahoo or something like that, then use that email address only for your craigslist sale.. then once the sale is over, you can just ignore that email account completely (as the spam continues to build up in it) until you might want to sell something else.. then just delete all the messages and start over..
