The "FOUND WHILE ON THE TRACTOR" Thread

Recommended Posts

Just wondering, we live in a world full of litterbugs. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has found a few random items on their yard while mowing or otherwise using their tractor. Today, while mowing for the first time this season, I found the gas cap off someone's car in the side ditch in front of my house. Last year I found a hat with the Olympic rings on it.

Found a 36" crow bar once, the new mower blade cost about the same as the bar was worth! :wh:

I had a slice of pizza (pepperoni) thrown at me when cleaning out the ditch of the house I bought in Virginia. Other than that...I have just found the usual trash (cans, wrappers, beer bottles, etc.)

I've found log chains, barbed wire, regular fence wire, electric fence wire.  A nest of newborn bunnies(that wasn't pretty) snakes, ground wasps, rags, rope, parts of machinery.  Lots of gravel, roots, rocks...  are we noticing a pattern here :eusa-think:

My father once lost his wallet while plowing a field.  Two years later he found it again plowing the same field, took what was left of the cash to the bank and they replaced it with new bills.

thats funny with the wallet thing, my dad had the same thing happen to him when tilling at our blueberry farm. He found it a year or two later and everything was still there.

We live on a gravel road that is fairly heavily traveled. In the 7 years I have been here I have  found. 3 pliers, 7 screw drivers, a Makita 12 volt drill (in the case), a Dewalt circular saw (in the case), 1 cell phone, a seed hopper from a JD corn planter,( I found the farmer that it belonged to, he was very happy to get it back as I guess they are worth about $600.00 bucks), And an engagement ring that was lost while jogging (also returned). Also, several mufflers, gas caps, a few tires and an old washing machine. The funniest thing though was a Polaris snowmobile that had apparently fallen off the trailer. The key was in it so I just rode it up to my shed and called the Sheriff. They ran the sticker number and got the owners name. I called him and as it was around 10:30 pm, he asked if he could pick it up the next day (also returned). I just wish someone would claim all the garbage that ends up in my ditch as well.

Wow... Just how exactly do you not notice your snowmobile falling off your trailer????   I know when I am trailering anything I can't keep my eyes off the mirrors.  Somehow I am guessing alcohol was involved.

Do you live on a corner by chance?  That's a lot of stuff that I can see flying off while taking a turn

Probably easier than you'd think...  Remember it's a snowmobile...it's cold so the windows are up, if you had the radio up, you'd never hear it.  Maybe a four place trailer... in the dark, the gravel road's already bumpy, you wouldn't notice a little extra jolt when if fell off... if there even was one.

Lucky thing is it made it to the ditch.... could you imagine flying down your hometown gravel road at night and all of a sudden that's laying in the middle of the road in the dark?

About all I ever find is my neighbor's empty beer cans and cigarette packs. Don't worry, I make sure he gets them back.

It was on a Sunday night about 9:00 pm. I was coming home from my brothers and when I got home there on the upward bank of the ditch was a sled. First I thought someone had broken down and left it there to get a trailer. The owner was on his way home from a trip up north and was trying to beat a big snowstorm home. He had a 4 place trailer and one of the straps he had on the sled broke and off it came. Luckily, it was close enough to the ditch when it came off that it went right over the bank and coasted up the ditch bank with no damage. When I called him, they had just gotten home and realized it was gone. Needless to say he was pretty happy that it didn't cause an accident or get wrecked. They had just gotten it as his wifes' Christmas present and they were on their first trip with it. He offered to pay me something for my time. But, I turned him down and told him to make sure he ties them down better next time. Funny, because he said they had just talked about putting ski locks on the trailer before they left on the trip. I'll bet he has them on there now. Jason, its funny that you mentioned the surprise factor. 2 weeks ago after our last big storm, I was on my way to work at 5:30 am and on down the road about a mile from my house, I saw taillights sitting in the middle of the road. When I got up to the car, it had hit a round bale of hay that had fallen off a trailer. The driver said she didn't see it until it was too late. She tried to stop but with the snow she couldn't. The damage was pretty bad but, she didn't get hurt. The young lady driving said. " How am I going to tell my dad that I hit hay on the road, and my car is wrecked"? Sounds funnier now than it did at the time.

All I find is empty soft drink (plastic) bottles and empty beer cans. I did catch a guy that threw an empty vodka bottle into the yard. He and I had a little discussion and I don't find vodka bottles anymore!

Found my one of my neighbors that I don't really know very well. Guess he had a massive stroke while walking back to his place late at night after running out of gas. Must have collapsed and rolled about 9 feet down in a ditch that I mow on occasion. Other than finding him all I find is your usual trash. Oh yeah a beat up Stihl chain saw that did not survive falling from someones vehical.

Everyone's favorite couple up the road just got their Christmas tree and the fake snow matting back. Those two pieces, plus a nice large plastic tub were blown down the street and into my back yard. Another neighbor spoke to the couple and informed them their tree blew over into Chuck's yard. They said they "really didn't need it back" and never bothered to retrieve it.

Tree and trim were lovingly relocated and zip tyed to their mailbox. The bin "spoke" to me and wished to become dismissed from cheesy Christmas decoration duty and take it's rightful place as part of my e- tank collection! Being the big-hearted polypropylene philanthropist I am, how could I refuse?

Ten times over 30 years I have found my own wood rail fence thrown about my front lawn after a driver didn't make the curve in the road just east of my driveway and drove through smashing the fencing.  No one has ever stopped to own up to the damage they had done during the night, so I have the lucky job and costs of replacing fence posts and rails, with clean up duty as well.  Many times there were plastic car parts of fog lights and grill pieces to clean up.  Then one time I awake to see 3 sections of fencing broken and strewn all around the front lawn. I go out to survey the damage, cussing under my breath, and start to pick up the larger plastic pieces from the car front end, only to find a license plate attached to the largest plastic piece.  The police contacted the plate owner who denied she had even been in my town, saying she did coincidentaly hit a guardrail in a town 15 miles from me the night before. Police viewed her car and matched the missing parts then prosecuted her for hit and run and giving false info.  A year later I get a call from the district attorney from the courthouse, asking the dollar amount of damage.  I told her I did the labor so parts came to about $200.  She couldn't believe the woman driver went through all this court action for that small amount.  She told me she would get me my reimbursement immediately.  That is the only time I recieved a dime from all the "honest" folks who do this damage.

It is temping to place large boulders across the frontage or place spike strips so they can't drie away, but I don't want to kill someone, so will stick with putting up with the damage from time to time, hoping one day an honest driver will actually stop and volunteer to pay up.

Wyatt.
