Auctions..... The inanity continues

Just got home from our annual spring social. Only got some tires for my sons car. There were several tractors that I bid on but, people are nuts. Bolens QS16 $200.00 Looked like the PO hit everything in the county and leaking everywhere plus, didn't run. WH 520 w/60" deck, blown engine. Looked like it never saw the inside of a shed $785.00. Jacobsen 16 horse, no side covers, all tires flat, rear pto bearings frozen, plus wouldn't start $375.00. Simplicity 16 horse, blown engine, deck rusted through. $300.00. They all looked like absolute junk. Then there were the "green" ones, Which went like JD's usually do but were scrap too. The only shining light at the whole auction were the 110 JD and the AC 10 horse, Both meticulously restored and brought $2360.00 for the pair. I wouldn't have paid that, but at least they were probably worth it. A friend of mine sold his Toro/Wheelhorse zero turn there but I wasn't there in time to see it go. If I had known he wanted to sell it? It wouldn't have gone to the auction. Oh well. The first auction of the spring/summer season, people are nuts is all I can say.

Are those prices really nuts compared to what comparable new, out of the box, equipment sells for?

I'm not debating, just contemplating the thought process that buyers use.

I guess even "tired" high quality equipment commands a price.

At least people are spending money maybe the economy is picking up, and it's early in the season, people have the fever to get out and buy something

Had just the opposite from our local auction 16hp Jacobson hydro with deck running $100, running JD 112 with blower 225, Bolens 1050 ran with sicklebar mower 250, nice 520 DXI with deck $1300. nice original C100 500, There were some I thought went real high but most were reasonnable.

Anyone need tire chains bought two barrels of 60ft each of logger style

I would have guessed the beat up equipment would have went for less money. But, I guess they could repower the bad engines with clones and then have a decent tractor that would be better than a box store tractor. That does make sense. With scrap being very high up here right now I would imagine that a few will meet their fate there. Duane, I would have thought those prices should have been how  these tractors went. The strange thing at this auction was, the stuff that should have brought big money didn't. A restored 9N Ford brought $900.00. There were several other smaller farm tractors some restored, some not. But, all sold for half or less than they should have. On that type of equipment and the Cars and Trucks, it was a buyers market.

First one I went to this year. $ 750 for a 314-H Classic that had 1300 hrs. 4 flats and didn't run. Plus a 10% buyers premium! :jaw:

IMO it all depends on the people that show up... I put a really worked over RJ on CL a couple of weekends ago... I just about got my asking price no questions asked within 2 hours of posting the ad. The buyer handed me the cash before even looking at it.

You would have thought to look at it first?...

At a local auction over the last two weekends I picked up a 1989-1991 520h with 48" deck for $220.00 and a very nice 42" deck for $27.50, two mid cultivators for $45.00 each, a single rear plow for $50 and a parts 1996 520h with swept front axle and gear reduction steering for $150.00 with a blown engine. The first 520 runs great and I mowed my yard and my parents yard with it last weekend. So there are still deals out there.

In our neck of the woods it seems fewer Wheel Horse tractors and attachments have been advertised this early Spring.  Maybe it is the weather but one year ago at this time there were many Wheel Horse products advertised around here at fair and bargain prices.

I hope there are more deals to be had.

This particular auction was our annual spring consignment auction. Farm auctions tend to have less people attending. But, on the plus side. There also seems to be alot less junk at these also. I just went to a farm auction last weekend and picked up a craftsman 8hp rear tine tiller. It has tranny problems so I got it for $10 bucks. The 8hp Tecky runs great but the tranny won't drive. It drives the tiller fine but, not the wheels.
