Attention Windows XP users

Important Announcement from Microsoft

This will also apply to this forum.  Our software vendor is already not supporting Windows XP (more specifically Internet Explorer running on XP).

While Windows 8 is a major change, you XP users should begin your quest to replace the operating system with something more current (Windows 7 / 8, Linux - pick your flavor) or replace with a new PC or Mac (still my preference).

Upgrading usually costs money, but it is important to keep current with this technology as new products which get rolled out will not take into account XP.

As far as the forum software is concerned, since I don't use IE on any of my computers, how does this effect the use of XP with Chrome or Firefox?

Was a Windows user from the early days. I'm talkin' DOS 3 running on an 8086. XP was and still is the best & most stable operating system Microsoft ever put out to end users. Once I heard over a year ago that they were going to stop supporting it, I had enough. I went to a MAC and have never looked back! We got my mother-in-law a new PC laptop running Windows 8 for Christmas this year. I went to set it up for her and what a disaster Windows 8 is! She is not computer savvy so I looked for a way to go back to the old "Start" screen. There isn't one. I had to download a shell program to get it for her. Even then it was horrible to navigate.

I've had good luck with the open source Classic Start Menu.  http://sourceforge.net/projects/classicshell/  on Windows 8.  Windows 8 is much better when used with a touch screen but unfortunately it was deployed on lots of non touch screen devices which don't work that great together.  There are a ton of new touch screen Windows 8 devices coming online now.  Better late than never.  Or you can just buy a multi-touch monitor.

At this point the only concern would be when does Google and Firefox drop support for XP?  Soon I'll bet.

I went to a MAC and have never looked back!

I know there are a lot of Apple haters out there, but you really can't beat the reliability of a Unix based system.  MOST of the large companies host their mission critical applications on Unix systems for stability.  When I was running windows computers, reloading the operating system (XP included) because of errors was almost common.  I've been running Mac's for years, and NEVER had to reload the operating system, or defrag the disk, or clean the registry.  They are more expensive, but those Chinese kids make them pretty solid.

Back to XP.  My work computer is Windows 7, and I actually like that better than XP (once I got used to it).  I have Windows 8 running in a virtual environment on my Mac, and I don't like it at all.

Even the  PC MAGAZINE is totally composed & designed on Macs, and has been since about '95.

Steve Jobs older sister is 'challenged' and has a 5 year-old mentality, he insisted that all their basic

computers and hardware be 'about at that operating level'.  Guess that's why I like Macs, my level.

I used BootCamp which is included on the Mac to be able to have dual boot capability. I have Windows XP loaded on the other partition. The Mac Book Pro actually runs Windows XP better and faster than any PC ever did. I still use XP because the CAD program I have is designed to run on Windows and not Mac. That's all I use it for so at this point I no longer care if they don't support it.

I switched to Linux (Ubuntu) a couple of years ago and never looked back.  It's way better, and it's free as is most of the software available for it.  There was a minor learning curve, but it was more than worth it. I installed it along side of my windows operating system, and the only time I boot windows is to occasionally let it update.  I could amost kick myself for not doing it sooner.
