D series PTO won't disengage

In the course of restoring my first D-200 I discovered the importance of the spring clip and washer that sits behind it inside the PTO assembly shaft.

D-31.jpg

It took me ages to puzzle out that the reason that the PTO pulley did not line up with the pulley on the PTO shaft below was that the PO had lost both the clip and washer. The fact that something was wrong also manifest itself in that tightening up the bolt that secures the assembly to the crankshaft resulted in the clutch plates being gripped firmly locking the pulley section to the crankshaft.

I've just started on a second D project and discovered that once again I had a PTO clutch that was permanently engaged and that adjustment would not cure. Removing the end bolt I could see both a spring clip and washer so all looked well and it couldn't be that or could it? - appearances can be deceptive!

This D has no PTO shaft from front to rear of the tractor so there isn't a lower pulley, if there had been I would have seen that something was actually wrong here. Adding a second washer behind the circlip must solve it I thought but no, it still pinched the clutch plates together when I tightened the end bolt. How can this be I thought - until it dawned on me what was happening.

Somehow the spring clip had been ejected from the groove that it should sit in and as the end bolt was tightened it was being pushed along inside the bore. Looking down the shaft it had looked ok but on the bench all was revealed. There was no damage to the grove or spring clip, possibly the PO had not installed it correctly..

With it on the bench iI did notice that the washer was reluctant to move down the bore getting caught at odd points. The machined bore was not noticable damanged in any way but I did find some high spots on the edge of the washer from where it had been stamped out. With those cleaned off it slid into place perfectly. It's also possible then, that when reassembled on a previous occasion the washer did not rest squarely on the clip and levered it out of it's groove as the end bolt was tightened.

I'll never know which it was but I thought I'd post the experience in case anyone else gets caught out with this. All may look well down that shaft when you remove the end bolt but is the clip actually sitting in its groove?

Hope somebody may find this useful in the future.

Andy

Very nice troubleshooting Andy.  It would have taken any of us many hours to (maybe) figure it out.

So it all comes down to a sketchy washer?

You are lucky that the internal groove didn't get beveled.  You would have probably would up with a useless piece of metal if that had happened.

WOW!!! Great info. Wished I would have found this sooner. I finally got sick and tired of mine not disengaging so after a few attempts to fix it, I replaced it with a double groove heavy dutty electric clutch. The blades stop in about 2 seconds now but would have been nice to have left the tractor original.

I was looking around on ebay and noticed that hydraulic actuators from John Deere 312, 317, etc models appear to be Identical to a Gt14 or d series lift cylinder. My question is would a new cylinder from ebay be able to replace one that is on a gt14 or d series?

Images below of cylinders to show similaritys.

My friction disc in gone on my clutch.  I saw the old post about making a new friction disc, so I'm not concerned about that.
I managed to remove the front clutch plate and double v-belt pulley.  But I can't separate the two.  When I took the assembly off the spiraloc washer popped off on its own.  I HAVE READ THE MANUALS.
So I should be able to just remove the pulley from the front clutch and continue with step 4.  The v-belt pulley is loose as all hell and flops around like a dead fish.  It seems to be hung up on a ring or bearing race.
So my thoughts are grab a BFH or sparky the blue tip wrench.
Is there an unpublished step 3.5, or some trick?

      Hey all,

My '74 D180 has a lot of trouble pushing snow.  Weighted tires, but nothing else at this time.  I've found it gets stuck frequently and only one wheel spins.  Do these tractors not have a limited slip/locker arrangement?  How does everyone manage with the infamous one wheel peel?

Hey all, I need to install a drive belt on my 75 D180 for my snowblower.  I've looked through a bunch of D-series owner's manuals, and none seem to mention replacement procedure.  The PTO pulley is fixed, save for engaging the PTO and there is minimal movement at the snowthrower pulley. There's no idler or tensioner as far as I can tell.  Do I have to remove the PTO pulley?  That seems to be a required service item.
Same question for my 80 D200 as well really.

      Using the recommended 4L490W belt.

      Thanks

I got a D-180 for $250, and the governor is messed up, the points won't open or close, and I took it apart and was being stupid and messed some stuff up in there, and now I need a new one.
Where can I get one that's not on eBay for $200?
I also forgot to say it was a Kohler K482, and I'll throw some pictures of the tractor in as a treat.
