Whining noise from PTO

Recommended Posts

thehorse

Can anyone give me an idea of what might be causing a loud whine from my manual pto on 416. It gets louder with increased RPM's and

happens whether under a load or not. I took the bell off and greased bearings inside and put it back together but helped very little.

What about the outer ball bearing?

Did you verify that it actually is the PTO clutch by starting the engine without the pulley installed?

There is also a sealed bearing where the engagement hoop and shaft attach on the front side of the bell

it is likely bad also. i would replace both ,and the inner race.

I'm in agreement with TT on this. Take the time to remove the PTO to see if the noise goes away.

Probably just a good idea to replace all of them and not have to worry about them for 20 years. I assumed it was the PTO because when it was engaged, the noise increased.

Good idea to run without the bell and engaged. If it is bearings.....anyone know where to find them at a reasonable price???

thanks,

Len

Make sure you check the drive pulley too. They've been known to loosen and get pushed back against the block face when engaging the PTO.

Sounds (sic) like the outer bearing. Don't forget to grease (wheel bearing) the inner bearing !!

Later they finally came out with a spacer for the drive pulley to prevent the 'slide-in'.

I HAD ONE WHERE THE OUTER SNAP WAS SPINNING WHEN THE PTO WAS ENGAGED AND LITTLE AFTER. A NEW SNAP RING AND PTO ADJUSTMENT SOLVED THAT PROBLEM.
