S/G Regulator Compatibility??

Recommended Posts

mid60's

I'm putting a 753 back together and I am in need of a regulator. My question is, will a regulator off an 856 work on the 753? I realize they are wired differently. The reg. off the 856 has a wire from the bottom that goes to the S/G. The reg. off the 753 does not have this wire. Will the reg. work if I do not hook this wire up? I'm not real good with the why's of electronics but I can read a diagram. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Save Old Iron

There are a few different physical layouts to different SG reg's but all styles must include a "G" generator terminal, a "B" battery terminal and a "F" field terminal. All reg's used on negative ground systems are grounded thru a flexible wire strap connected to the reg body to the reg feet.

Some regs may include an "L" load terminal. The "L" terminal may be ignored if it is present on a replacement regulator but not on your original.

Check out both regulators to see if they have the "G", "B" and "F" terminals.
