Rust question

Recommended Posts

Just bought a utility trailer and it has some Rust that I want sand the best I can then prime and paint. I was just wondering what primers and paints are best seeing I won't be able to get all the rust off. Thanks

I have always used Rustoleum rusty metal primer on rust that couldn't all be removed, then paint with whatever paint you like for a topcoat. I'm sure opinions will vary widely on this topic, but that's what works for me. :)

I too have had good luck with Rustoleum Rust Reformer and their Rusty Metal Primer.

Dittos on the rusty metal primer. For rust removal on large items, I purchased a cheap vacuum style sand blaster from TSC. It will get to places you can't get sanding.

Another option for rust remover is a needle scaler. Harbor frieght has a cheap one. Get extra needles for it too

Rustoleum, all the way. Scrape off the scale you can get to. Tap the rest with a hammer and then? Paint over it. Good to go. Its a trailer. All of my trailers seem to be stopping devices for the Bobcat when the boys are loading stuff. I'm just happy when the fenders stay straight :handgestures-fingerscrossed:
