Vinylguy 4,692 #4 Posted January 10, 2013 It does not appear to know which way it wants to turn :ROTF:
Martin 2,133 #5 Posted January 10, 2013 (edited) i think its a 953 (1963) if the steering wheel on it is original. cant quite see the steering box to know if it has the ross setup. nothing wrong just get it....... Edited January 10, 2013 by Martin
hm12460 53 #6 Posted January 10, 2013 No major known problems that I'm aware of.... looks like it has a lot of experience though.
Kelly 1,033 #7 Posted January 10, 2013 It's a 953 or 1054 only thing I see wrong is some missing parts that are not easy to find any more, but if the price is right........ buy it.
Duff 206 #8 Posted January 10, 2013 Does it have a hood, or is that just outside the camera shot? Duff
Iggy68 28 #9 Posted January 11, 2013 Yeah buy it if the price is right. Tires are worth a bunch if not dry rotted. New ones with tubes cost over 300 for the set.
marreque 214 #10 Posted January 11, 2013 Buy it, wish i had it in my yard. Oh ya, its a 953 or 1054.
gratefulydeadman 25 #11 Posted January 13, 2013 hey guys. i have recently traded for the tractor in this forum. i contacted the guy who origionally owned this machine and he told me that its a 1054. i came to find out in the discussion that 2.5 years ago he took it to blue mountain to have the engine serviced and that it ran great when parked. i havnt had a chance to try to fire it up because the tank if full of old gas. i just got a chance today to take a really good look at it and realized it doesnt have geared steering. i believe it has the "ross" steering. i believe thats what it is called. so does that make it a 953? the tractor also came with all of the parts that u see missing in the picture above. it has the headlights, deck cover, a new grill, and oil bath filter. what it does need is the belt cover and new tie rods. i will post better pics when the sun comes back out. lol. also, is there anyone on here that knows the serial numbers of these machines? it still has origional serial number stickrr on it. the problem is that there is a little tiny piece of the sticker missing that has the last numer or two on it:( but from what is there i am getting 62-83_.. it looks like there is only room on the sticker for one more number. does anyone know what the serial number ranges were for this tractor? i promise to post more pics tomorrow. thanks ralph
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,510 #12 Posted January 14, 2013 Have seen 62-799 and 62-921 here at RS. These are in the 1st batch of 4 batches of 1963 953 models recorded so far. Garry
JUSS10 250 #13 Posted January 14, 2013 you can run it without the belt cover if you had to, i used to do that on mine because my belt cover was rubbing weird. However i strongly recommend against doing that. I almost lost a finger (or at least mangled a finger) last winter when i was plow and set my hand near it and it pulled my glove in cutting off the tip of the glove finger. Sobering moment. So yeah, cover is hard to find, but it could be made simply by a sheet metal shop and there should only be one tie rod from one side to the other so that can easily be made or replaced as well. I would buy it if the price is right, love my machine!
Martin 2,133 #14 Posted January 14, 2013 from that partial serial number and the ross steering it looks like you have a 953. from you original pic i zoomed in on the steering wheel and it wasnt a 1054 shaped one, looked like the 953 with the center section missing. i think from the steering wheel, ross steering box and that serial number its a sure bet its a 953.... im not sure when exactly they changed to the later 1054 style steering wheel. the later wheel continued into 1967. do you have the steering wheel center section as well? if not its going to be a hard item to get ahold of. these can be converted to later style steering though if needed. like justin said a belt guard can be made up fairly easily, its not a complicated piece to bend up. the tie rods are easy to fabricate too, used ones are usually worn beyond repair anyway. lots of members on here (myself included) have fabricated up new tierods for these models. check out my 1054 build in my sig, i think i had a few pics of what i did with mine..... you didnt mention whether you had a hood or not? gratefulydeadman 25 #15 Posted January 14, 2013 sorry... i do have the hood. i forgot that in my post.. lol. and what do u mean by the center section?
Martin 2,133 #16 Posted January 14, 2013 (edited) i just realized that we may be talking about two different tractors here. are you saying you bought the tractor in the pic above or a completely different one? sometimes it gets confusing when somebody other than the op starts asking questions about their tractor in the same thread, i guess thats my fault for not paying attention..... what i was saying about the center section was for the early steering wheel in the pic above, it doesnt look like its there. its a totally different wheel than the 1054 style wheel. heres one, not my picture or tractor..... gratefulydeadman 25 #17 Posted January 14, 2013 i now own the tractor in the pic above. sorry. i will post better pics tomorrow
Martin 2,133 #18 Posted January 14, 2013 cool, i guess it all worked out ok then. do you remember if the wheel is like in the pic above?
gratefulydeadman 25 #19 Posted January 14, 2013 it doesnt have the little grip things on it .. the entire circumference is smooth. except for the small bumps on the underside of it. and doesnt have the centerpiece either
